College student thinking about enlisting

Since Intel Officer is really competitive, does anyone know about Information Warfare? My first college courses were in Information Security and I was in IT for 3 years full time while in Community College. I am A+ and Network+ Certified, took Cisco Academy courses, competed in cyber defense competitions, etc.

I don't know, however you should be aware that when you apply you put up to 3 positions that you want to apply for - so you can have both on there.

What would you recommend as a 3rd? Intel, Information Warfare, and what else?

to stay with the theme...

just an FYI they strongly discourage applicants for IW who do not have calc and calc based physics.

I applied INTEL, IW and SWO, so my personal suggestion for a third slot would be SWO (but then what do I know).

Good luck on that whole Chinese thing.

I know a guy that is a Mustang (meaning prior enlisted) IW. If you want, PM me and I will try to help you conatct him (shouldn't be a problem right now). Just make sure to ask him specific questions about enlistling or IW, as he is a busy man and that would be at the very least respectful.

If you are interested in IW, head over to www.informationwarriors.net

It's just like this blog...but specifically focused for IW types.

Be smart, use the search tool there to see if your questions have already been raised and answered...and if not, fire away.

I think reading Air Warrior has given me the impression that the enlisted life is awful. I'm sure that isn't entirely accurate. I think I really want to do intel which is really hard to do if you want to go the officer route. Would it be so bad to become an Intel Specialist and continue my degree part time? I think I would make a great officer but I don't think I need it after some thought about what I really want.
You will probably not have the time to complete your degree while on active duty in your initial 4 years. I suppose it can be done, but it'll take a hell of a lot of discipline and long days.

I think after reading some post here I just spooked myself into thinking that I would have to completely put my life on hold for 6 years (i'll be 29 after 6 years). But I'll still be able to get married and have my wife live on base with me with her two cats, continue my degree, and save for that nice house in Langley when I continue my career, right?
See above about the degree part. Of course you'd be able to have a personal life when not deployed out to sea. My uncle met my aunt while he was at enlisted prototype in NY.

Every enlisted guy who graduates A school is an E-3, except for nukes and possibly some other special programs who get a crow out of A school. Oh, and except the guys who screw up in A school, go to mast, and become an E-1 or E-2.

No, every enlisted guy is not an E-3 out of A school...not even close.

I was told that graduate boot, get E-2. Graduate A school, get E-3. Guess I was told wrong. Sorry for the bad gouge.

A-School just gets you a rate. If you are top of the class in A-School there are promotion opportunities (E-2, E-3). When I graduated my E stayed at 1, but my AR became ADAR. Clear as mud?

I wanted to thank everyone who posted in this forum. Living near in Annapolis my whole life I guess its easy to forget that you can become a naval officer any other way then the Academy. You all have definitely motivated me to start turning things around, bust my ass, and go for it.

I'm retaking a couple classes to fix my GPA and should have a 2.7 by the end of the school year. So i'll be applying for the BDCP in May. I'm going to try and take some classes over the summer also. If I'm not selected the first time I'm not going to let that get me down and I'm going to keep reapplying.
