Gentleman:
Can any one tell me anything about flying AH-1W cobras? I know they are getting an upgrade, and I know about the aircraft itself, but if fly them, where can I expect to be stationed? deployments? flight school training? etc? What can I expect? I honestly have little preference as to what I fly, however, when I make my wish list, I think cobras will be my # 1. I thought Frumby would probably have the scoop on this. Sir?
Respectfully,
Lt. Williamson, USMC

Click this link. The file is rather large but I think it will answer most of your questions. Scroll all the way to the bottom for the Cobra.

www.tbs.usmc.mil/Pages/Officer%20Courses/Default/MOS%20Handbook/MOS.htm

It is also a good resource for any job in the Marines period.

The reason the page doesn't show is because the address needs to be https://, not http://. When you click ont he address, your web browser defaults to an http address but it needs to point o a secure one by using https.
The key here is simply adding the s after http

Helos don't have NFOs! Both cockpit positions are pilots. That's in all American military helos. Can we put this one to bed? Both cockpit crewmembers must be able to manipulate the controls because helos are inherently unstable--you can't take your hands off the controls for any length of time without someone to take them for you. NFOs can become pilots by applying to switch, but they have to go back to flt school and do everything over, except API.

Cobras--I'm a phrog guy, but to give some short answers... The AH-1Z upgrade should be out in 2004-6. That gives the bird 4 blades vice 2, better avionics, better sensors, bigger engines, etc...

Stations: MCAS New River in Jacksonville, NC. MCAS Camp Pendleton outside San Diego. From New River, a det of snakes will be attached to a 46 squadron to go on MEU deployments mostly to the Med, but of course some go through to the Arabian Sea now. From Camp Pen, you'll go on West Pac pumps, anywhere from the Orient to the Middle East, but again, the Arabian Sea is a lot more likely now. You may also do a "UDP," where you go to Okinawa, Japan for 6 mo and go on several shorter deployments.

Flt school--same as anyother helo driver. The AH-1 FRS takes longer than the others, about 5-6 mo. It will probably take longer to get assigned for your first deployment than your assault peers. Of course, tat also depends on current events.

HML/A squadrons have both Hueys and Cobras. They're considered a little more intense and less laid-back than the others, for better or for worse. You get to shoot weapons a lot more than assault guys, though not as much as you might think. On the other hand, you don't get the opportunity to command an aircrew of 4 and have the responsibility for troops in back, which is one of the cooler things about assault support flying.
