GOUGE CMP M1 Garands - Opportunity

Additionally, the CMP hasn't always been in the business of re-barreling and putting together Garands out of their parts stock.
Back in the 2011 timeframe, they acquired a metric-ton of drill rifles, which were basically functional Garand parts kits less the welded-up barrels and receivers. They also previously had a pretty big stock of Garand receivers from the batch of returns from Greece circa 2005 that had finish issues and surface pitting, etc.
When the Garand stock started getting thin, they began putting together functional rifles out of all the parts with new barrels (e.g. the CMP Special Grades).
Once they started playing with headspace, they needed to test fire.
Field Grade M1's are available again - for $650 you would be getting a very solid, accurate rifle.

@FrankTheTank its a bit of an ordeal - since the rifle is not shipped through an FFL, rather direct FEDEX to your door.
You will need a copy of your DD-214 and proof of some membership in a shootiung organization - a local club, a national shooting sports association, etc. You probably belong to a qualifying org already.
Its a paper (snail mail/physical mail) ordering process - with a wait time of around 90 days.

@FrankTheTank a simple copy is fine - its a bit of an old school process - but the results are really satisfying. CMP doesn't cash your check until they are ready to ship your rifle.
Copy is just fine - I took an smartphone photo and printed it.
I ended up just calling them and got all the paperwork straightened out.. However, anybody interested in doing this expect watching paint dry to be faster. They are backed up to early March in processing. I sent my paperwork maybe 15/16 April and she said they ain’t even close to that date. And that call was last Monday.
Am I the only one who wonders why some bright spark doesn't start manufacturing brand-new, MIL-SPEC and/or "march grade" M1s? Seems like the market interest would surely be there...like any one of the hundreds of 1911 clones currently available.

In the end, I think its about cost - and the 6 Million or so M1 receivers out there. The receiver itself is an incredibly diificult part to manufacture and machine. A few have tried to cast M1 receivers with disasterous results.
