DFAS can and will collect any money owed to them (even after all service ties are severed). The question is whether one owes money the govt.

Incorrect, DFAS cannot collect monies from a person who is no longer in the service. If there is a person who owes money to Uncle Sam after they are out of the service then it is turned over to the IRS, but DFAS will not and cannot collect monies from people who are already out.

Alright Vic!
I wasn't guessing!
I went to OCS in 1993 and did not follow with my degree or my commission or incur any service obligation. I did receive $150 per month for a couple years. Well, when I "got out" of the program, naturally I had to pay all that money back. DFAS hounded me to pay (I was a civilian and out of the service), worked out a payment plan, etc. I think i was even in and out of collections when times were tough. Needless to say I paid it all off and later did it all over and accepted commission. Craziness!

josh,
They can hound you all they want, but in order to take money with out you giving them permission it would be through the IRS. We are talking about two diffrent situations. No problem.

Also, I didn't mean to sound like you took it. Anyway, I think you had enough fun with DFAS. I hope that's the last time they mess with you! jaja
