Does anyone have any info on Xmas break? my ocs date is nov 9 and from what i understand, OCS shuts down for two weeks, but what two weeks? Is it the week of xmas and the next week or is it the week before xmas and the week of xmas? If anyone knows, I'd appreciate.

Hey, congratz on your OCS ... I can't speak for OCS, but most commands will cut out for Xmas from the week prior (like Dec20 or so), all the way through Jan1 and you take your time in there. They will make sure your well informed then, maybe ask your recruiter in the mean time.

Anyone know if that 2 weeks leave officially counts against your 30 days? Not that I have a choice, but if I did, I would take leave after I'm commissioned so that I can get paid MORE to sit on my ass.

It's called Christmas Exodus and it does dock your annual leave. Hispanics can take an extra couple of days if they wish to be at home for 3 kings day.

Leave is leave no matter when and it all counts against your 30 days, you can acrue your yearly days up till 75 before you lose it all if not used and start back down at zero. But don't worry, If your up on sitting around, you can count duty days of sitting around the house on call and time at the SDO desk as sitt'n on your arse and getting paid ... Or if your really up for some hard core sitting around, when your a DIV-O you can hang out with all your division shops until all the various brain frying MAFS for only one of the shops are signed off which could possibly run all the way till the end of the oncoming shift ... LOL

Anyway, thats the leave info... hope it helps.

I know this is knit picking, but just to clarify, since the question was asked...

Like Valion said, leave is leave, it's not like in school, where there's breaks. You can take leave even if you don't have any days (like when you're commissioned), you just go in the hole. You can earn up to 60 days of leave and keep them on the books, then you can earn another 30 that will stay w/ you until the end of the next fiscal year (October), where it will drop down to 60 again. Of course to further complicate things, you can change that 60 to 90 if you're part of an operational command (something I'm unfortuneately going to test out when October comes around).

This is all on the www.bupers.navy.mil site under the MILPERSMAN, in case anyone wants to get the real skinny.

Is it 60 ... I couldn't remember if it was 60 or 75 when I wrote it, anyway, good info. Word to the wise, don't go in the hole, it's bad juju and you end up standing TONS of watch's while everyone is on leave or you end up missing Marti Gras cause you have no leave and end up seeing the pic's of the betty nuggs flashing and all your friends puking instead of experiencing it first hand ... LOL

They dont let you go "in the hole" anymore. They take that ammount of leave you are in the whole out of your pay the next month to keep you at zero.

Wow, that sucks...I guess. Although worrying about leave when you know you're going to flight school is kind of a waste of time. The opportunity to take any is few and far between, historically anyway.

I work with DFAS and that not going in the whole is a myth. If you do know of a place that collects money from your pay if you go in the whole, please let me know where you are stationed.

I've never heard of the military taken pay away instead of letting you go in the whole. If anything they might offer that as an option to you, but I've never heard of that either. Normally the military will not let you go anymore than 30 days in the whole. You can also not go over what you max leave accrual would be for your enlistment.

Ghost-ttu if your brother is 6 months in the whole that means that he has used up his leave for the next six years. I feel for him if thats the case.

There is always "basket leave" but that is a completely different can of worms...

Taking pay for leave owed sounds like something that would happen when someone is forced out of the service or their obligation is up, and they owe some leave to the government becuase they are in a negative status.

I was in the hole for the first year after graduating A school, I took 30 days leave prior to reporting to my first command, way back when, and as others have mentioned, it is not a good place to be. Special liberty anyone?

dewahl,
The link you provided was for DJMS updates in 1997. What they mean by excess leave is that if you look at your LES and it says 15 days left for EAOS balance and you are 20 days in the whole, then the automated system will collect 5 days worth of pay. The only way to fix that is if you reenlist for 2 more years then your your new EAOS balance will be 75. If you are 15 days in the whole then it's okay because you have the potential to earn at least that while on your current enlistment. Out-of-service debts are frowned on by the IRS, and the IRS is the only one who can collect money from somebody who is not in the service anymore.
