CHP vs Marine F-18

Just got this in a email pretty funny,

Don't play with your Radar Gun

Two California Highway Patrol Officers were conducting speeding
enforcement on I-15, North of MCAS Miramar. One of the officers was
using a hand held radar device to check speeding vehicles approaching
near the crest of a hill.

The officers were suddenly surprised when the radar gun began reading
300+ miles per hour. The officer attempted to reset the radar gun, but
it would not reset and turned itself off.

Just then a deafening roar over the treetops revealed that the radar
had
in fact locked onto a USMC F/A-18 Hornet which was engaged in a low
flying exercise near the location.

Back at the CHP Headquarters the Patrol Captain fired off a complaint
to
the USMC Base Commander. Back came a reply in true USMC style:

Thank you for the message, which allows us to complete
the file on this incident. You may be interested to know that the
tactical computer in the Hornet had detected the presence of, and
subsequently locked onto your hostile radar equipment and automatically
sent a jamming signal back to it.

Furthermore, and air to ground missile aboard the fully
armed aircraft had also automatically locked onto your equipment.
Fortunately the Marine Pilot flying the Hornet recognized the situation
for what it was, quickly responded to the missile system alert status
and was able to override the automated defense system before the
missile
was launched and your hostile radar was destroyed.

Thank you for your concerns.

Gonna call BS on this one...

Furthermore, and air to ground missile aboard the fully
armed aircraft had also automatically locked onto your equipment.

In CONUS, flying with HARM or other stuff that could engage that? I don't think so.

missile
was launched and your hostile radar was destroyed.

Automated defense system? Has something changed?

In the same vane...

I got an e-mail today from a close friend of my fathers. Mr. C. was a USAF intel guy in Viet Nam era. It was a picture of the wooden fighter from "Stealth" on the flight deck of a carrier. The caption said something about "New secret fighter being tested for "Catapult fit checks" Unfortunately he bought into this crap. Freaking internets...

In the vein of being paranoid. I live in the flight path of Marine 1 to Thurmont (Camp David). They often chase the "ladies" from their sunbathing perch on the upper patio.

Yesterday friend an I were working on some frequency modulation stuff. We had a sweep generator with sawtooth going full blast, pigtail antenna tuned to upper 108mhz area. We were "on the air" with the generator, albeit at low power. Marine 1, then backup Marine 1 showed up, circled the house, and general area for about 45 minutes. Left and about 15 mins later they again appeared, hovered, darted around for another 30 minutes. Departed, then returned for flyover 1500 feet.

Friend insisted they were looking for our transmitter, even wanted to call the Secret Service to explain!

I can only hope he was posting it because he thought it was funny, not because he thought it was true. I'm a dumb helo guy, and I knew it wasn't true - but I still got a chuckle...

No I don't believe it, I thought it was funny hence the first line, after that it's all email. If otherwise I would have put it in current news or something. No need to weep for the future of naval aviation...yet :)

This is a true story;

Happened to be sitting in a fully marked patrol car near a civilian airport doing paperwork and watching planes. At one point decided to get out of my fully marked patrol car wearing a uniform and use binos to get a closer view. Paranoid ASA crew decides that I am pointing a handheld radar unit at them in an attempt to cause them harm. They land, call their ops, who call the FBI. Several minutes later I get to talk to everyone important in my department as well as an FBI agent.

In the end we all came to the conclusion that I am not a terrorist, and that looking at an airplane with binos is not against the law. Yet.

This had to be mere coincidence. There is nothing in that freq range that aircraft would be particularly interested in. There may have been the possibility of EMI with comms or NAVAIDS, but it's not a security issue, nor would those aircraft be equipped to precisely locate such a signal.

I cant count how many time I have gotten a hit from police radar guns when ferrying a bird across the country. The angry little APR troll tells me I have a Helo tracking. Fuel and boredom considered I usually give them a little fly by.

... mere coincidence ...

Of course. Some sort of training for the Marine 1 group. Why my immediate area? Who knows. Just a funny story attop the original post and the neighborhood.

My friend was convinced, still convinced. Backdrop: George Tenet, while Director Central intelligence/CIA lived next door until about 9 months ago so some very draconian security measures were in place around here, ergo some rather commical happenings; often.

Think the original post was funny, had heard it before. Probably some kernel of truth imbedded in the fluff.:sleep_125

Maybe one of them recognized you as the guy who pulled them over and wanted to pay the hassle back ;)...On a lighter note, they fly for ASA, and still have acne.

More likely they were empty and looking for the ladies they routinely see on their perch.

Have a former co-worker who lives up there and her husband is a HAM operator. They in fact did get a visit from the SS shortly after they erected his antenna (which was tall enough he had to do a lot of permit work for). They were not home at the time. The SS cut the gate up the mountain checked things out and left. They didn't mind as they had also repaired the gate and it was in better shape than before they had cut it!
