They don't park 7 Battle Groups off Taiwan, the Pacific, specifically 7th Fleet, covers a vast area.

China and her cruise missiles would just DROOL at that opportunity.

Vette: Thanks for the link. I understand a little better what everyone is talking about. I remember my LPO talking about this a couple of years ago. Wow! 7 BG's in a somewhat organized fashion deploying.

Slammer2: The costs are planned for far in advance and mostly comprise of funds that would be used for regular work-ups. So, is it a lot of money... yes. Is it more expensive than normal ops... not really. Much better than the operating costs of the Marines dune time traing they do every year (can't remember the name though).

As far as China goes it is the normal posturing that they do everytime that ROC starts talking of complete indepedance. I would say keep an eye on China though. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if we get into a cold-warish arms race. China has the ambition of being the dominant Pacific-rim hegemon and later on being the military numero-uno. Check out some of the releases that the PRC has put out pertaining to building their fleet and air forces.

China gets more ambitious every year with their posturing. Arms race? We are already in one with them, I just don't think we've noticed yet. They sure as heck have started. They're building like crazy. Word is that they're buying up all the steel they can. Check out some of the documents they've put out about fighting the United States. Sure, we plan for war against everyone, that's nothing new. But they've been making their intentions public. They expect a fight with us in the future and they're planning for it.

I think you and I are arguing symantics. Yes China is building, I agree with that, but in order to have a race it takes at least two. The last time I checked we just cut 80K+ jobs from the Navy alone. SWO is at 210% manned. Pilot is 110%(+/- 5%) and the other officer communties sans Nuke is right up there.

I think someone needs to send a memo to Congress that there is more out there than just the Middle East.

Over the past year Business Week has reported that both India and China may become super powers over the next decade or so. Also, the word around the campfire is that Russia may be coming back (my dad was AF intel, and they knew right after the Berlin Wall fell that Russia would come back eventually).

Either way, if any of those countries become super powers we'll probably be looking at another Cold War. Even India. I've talked to quite a few Indian int'l students at UA about politics and they all seem slightly resentful, so IMO (note that I just graduated from high school, so it's not worth much), India might start an arms race as well.

Do you (Fly Navy and Vegita) have a cat fetish or something? I like the pics though. Where did you get them?

I've yet to find a funny dog pic. And I think mine's photoshopped. I HOPE it's photoshopped. Poor kitty.

Anyway, isn't it a pretty good show of force to keep anybody who's thinking we're too tied up in Iraq from getting too aggressive? I think a show of force, if effective as a deterrent, offsets whatever we spend on it. And it's probably valuable training, for managing that many CVBGs in a theater at once.

What I was saying is, China is trying to get ahead and it seems like we're not doing anything to counter it. But I"m not privy to the intel.

We're overmanned because we have no budget. They go hand in hand.

Is there an ECHO, ECho, echo...

I agree with you. Just kidding, but serioulsy I do. (A little Dodgeball humor)

Do you see any parallel to this and Jackson's gunboat Navy? or the wake of anyother land war? After the Navy does all the A$$ kicking the Army goes in plays around while the Navy's budget gets cut. :icon_rage I say cut the Army and Air Force out all together and build up the Navy-Marine Corps team!!! :D
