well there were no rules...it just said "have a calculator"...
If he says "have a calculator," he probably expects you to write out the equation, make the appropriate compounding adjustments, and then use the calculator to find your final answer. In other words, you would only be multiplying, adding, etc.
If he is not teaching you how to use a financial calculator (e.g. TI BA-II) he doesn't intend for you to be using a calculator function to solve the problem, which is what your TI-83 is doing for you.
I see this as cut and dry, but talk to the professor.
Instead of using a TI-83 with a program that any dummy could use (I think this is a little closer to cheating), get a finance calculator.
The TI-83 can perform the same tasks without turning you and circles. Beyond that, MS Excel.
I would say the moral aspect is equivalent.
