Check the syllabus. If it doesn't prohibit technology, then LET A SLEEPING DOG LIE. Let that be your guiding principle forevermore in your life, especially in the military, unless is has to do with the S word.

People always used Ti-89s to do the really nasty, snarly stuff in our physics courses. FTR, I didn't, but only because I was cheap, not because I was principled.

Instead of using a TI-83 with a program that any dummy could use (I think this is a little closer to cheating), get a finance calculator. It'll essentially do the work for your but you'll definitely need to know your s**t to input the correct things in the correct manner. Besides, if you ever actually planned on using finance in your future, like when deciding on the type of mortgage you'd like or how much of a down payment you should make, a finance calculator can do about 1,000 different fxns. And, I bet your prof would be impressed you know how to use one.

To do simple equations though, it's ass-backwards. On a regular calculator you'd type 5 + 5 and then hit = to get an answer. On these you type 5, then enter, then 5, then +, and then you get your answer. It takes awhile to get used to.

Dude, it's finance...you won't need that stuff to fly airplanes...left side fuel, plus right side fuel, plus aux tanks, plus A/C weight equals I can go fly! I say use the calsulator, F it, drive on.

Yeah, make sure you take a slide rule with you, too.

haha...the way i see it, after reading the posts is to take what's given to me. i have the technology and i understand the concepts enough to take advantage of my technology and unless otherwise told...keep using it. this is my last class for my degree...and while i'd LOVE to learn the nitty gritty of finance :sleep_125 (ie finance calculator) i want to get a good grade and press on...now assuming i get to flight school...flying would be my craft and i understand needing to use the whiz wheel and what not to gain an understanding as opposed to punching in some numbers and reading the output on my displays..

College is about getting grades, not about learning (unfortunately). Did you break any rules? If yes, turn yourself in. If no, you did what you're supposed to do.

As someone said, think smarter, not harder. It will get you much farther in life. And college is not life, by the way.

Those in life who think harder instead of smarter become NFOs.;):D

well there were no rules...it just said "have a calculator"...and there has been no test yet over this material..however the test will be problems that were introduced today that i will just whiz through in 2 seconds because of my program...however it isn't "cheating" because i manually have to enter it..and it doesn't visually show the formulas which would be the same as if i snuck a note card with formulas in it....that being said i know the concepts, but i do have an advantage..and the question was is that advantage unethical? im leaning towards no..because i still have to know how the concept works and what information to enter in and then be able to understand the output given to know if it makes sense or not.

More like use the whiz wheel as a beer coaster. I'm not sure if I've gained anything from my use of a whiz wheel, but understanding is certainly not one of those things.

we didnt just use them for ground school instruction we had to use them in the cockpit too... it was a PITA to calc wind drift and diversions with all that crap on my lap...and also battling the oklahoma winds, which are crazy and unpredictable.

Just guessing, but I bet you would have held the plane on course much better if you had both hands on the controls and your head up as opposed to fiddling with a whiz wheel in your lap that gives you a relatively useless wind drift correction. How much correction do you need? 7 degrees? No. You need whatever it takes to hold the plane on course; much simpler that way. Whatever, it's part of the hazing I guess.

i asked the chief flight instructor during my check ride and he was like.."we all do it this way"...i mean, i had my nav chart, whiz wheel, and pencil on my lap while trying to fly and calculate a "diversion"..seemed very awkward

I would not ask the prof. Hypothetically, let's assume you say "Hey professor, check out this nifty trick my calculator can do, it's almost like I don't even have to know what I am doing." His response is likely going to be "Oh shit, no calculators for anyone". How popular are you going to be after that one? If he says calculators are fair game on the test, they are fair game. If you are worried about it for some personal reasons, don't use your fancy program (but really, why worry), just don't torpedo the rest of your class while you're at it.

Not prohibiting it doesn't necessarily mean it's allowed either. Colleges are a tad different than the Navy.

Other than asking the professor outright, the only other guidance I'd say is does the prof allow you to have an equations/ cheat sheet you can take in to use on the test? If you can use that, I'd say that's equal to using the calc.

Those in life who think they are better than NFO's.....find themselves surrounded by them in P-3's.:D......almost forgot, they put a Flight Engineer in there to move the throttles so as to further antagonize you.:D
