This coin was given to me by a former staff sergeant. He works for me and I've been helping him to get a promotion into corporate security for FedEx and he gave this to me to show his appreciation and because he knows of my intentions of becoming a Marine.

Cool piece...reminds me of when a SuppO Lt and friend of mine reached into his desk one day when I was visiting him and threw me a 25 year old Supply Corps insignia pin, and said "Now that I gave you that, you've got to promise me you'll go make it through OCS."

Made me feel good!
 
It's called a challenge coin because you're supposed to have it on your person at all times. Another person can 'challenge' you at any point, and if you don't have your coin, you buy beer or push, depending on who/where you are. Kind of lame, especially when people start comparing their coins to see who has to push/buy; I.e.: The higher rank the commander of the unit on the coin, the more likely the OTHER guy has to pony up. Kind of like playing bullsh!t, if that's how you roll.
 
It supposedly started as a crusty old chief's tradition where they would carry a bullet in the chamber of their handgun to the club. Eventually, some smart person reasoned that guns and ammo have no place in a social setting and outlawed the pratice. Being crusty and thrifty chief's began carrying charge coins in there place and as stated above those who didn't have one to displace upon inspection bought a round for his bro to enjoy. There is some highearial system whereby some coins trump other with a White House coin being the coolest of cool. Today, wearing a hat or ring a strategically located bell serves the same purpose and is less dangerous than guns.
 
So, when I put on my bars I have to start buyin the rounds? Damn, I knew there were some downsides to this whole deal ;)
