CG Auxiliary and State Defense Forces

Hey Everyone,

Recently I've become interested in joining either the USCG auxiliary or my closest State Defense Force (basically the guys who are the reserves for the national guard...?). Does anyone have any experience with either organization? I've researched but there doesn't seem to be much information out there. For those who are interested, the MD and VA defense forces are what I'm looking at (I live in DC and we don't have one).

CG Auxillary is probably NOT the organization you are looking for. The CG Aux tends to be older individuals who do some fucntions of the CG on a limited basis, but tend to focus more on other things.
CG Reserve would be the typical reserve commitment.

Good luck finding something that will work for you!!

I was disenrolled as a mid and I can't join any federal organization (USMC, USA, USN, USAF, USCG) until policies change. However, I'd still like to join something like the CG Aux or one of my close state defense forces. However (no offense to anyone in them) I'm getting the impression that the cgaux is pretty much for older married men who want to do something community service related. Are the state forces the same way?

thanks

State defense forces are in no way connected to anything US military. They are not the "reserves to the National Guard".

If you still want to help your country while not being in the military there are still many ways to do so. May I recommend a few,

http://www.americorps.org/

http://www.teachforamerica.org/ (Good for when you get your degree)

http://www.peacecorps.gov/ (I might get crap for that but there are some good programs, a few of my friends have done it and enjoyed it)

I am sure there are many others out there if you look, but for now I would focus on getting your degree (if you haven't gotten it yet) and do the best you can. You never know, things can "change."

I have actually looked into joining the CGA here locally. The biggest issue I have had is that they meet once a month. I was unable to swing by the meeting due to training commitments so I have to wait a month.

This site has additional information and contacts for additional information. Like someone stated previously it is mostly older retired folks. Still a good friendly organization from the ones I have met.

Good luck.

+1 - The CG Aux could work- but I don't think it's what you are looking for. Some of the above ideas could be a bit closer.

Best of luck!!
