CAPT Nels Tanner passed away last week. His was one of the more legendary stories from the Vietnam prisoner of war canon. My first assignment out of residency was to NAMI, where I got to work with the Mitchell Center and the Repatriated Prisoner of War program. In retrospect, there couldn't have been a better assignment to instill into a very junior doctor what it meant to be a Naval officer.
