He was such an explorer and pioneer.

The first rendezvous in space. The first to leave Earth orbit and venture to the Moon. IMHO the crew of Apollo 8 had bigger brass balls than just about anyone else. That mission proved that we understood spaceflight. And then he did it again with a broken spaceship.

Fair winds and follow seas, Sir. We'll remember you forever.

Unfortunately I can't find the video on YT at the moment, but there's a fantastic hour long panel put on by a press club (I think it's the Washington Press Club) that has the principles from the movie and Jim Lovell being interviewed up on a dais. When someone was asked a question, they had to get up and go to the podium to be heard. It's a great look at the behind the scenes as well as some stories from Lovell about the real events.

But my absolute favorite part is when someone asks Lovell if he took Hanks up flying. Lovell starts to get up but Hanks has already beat him to the microphone and tells Lovell to sit down. Hanks then goes on to describe what it was like flying with Lovell in a Cessna. It's a great exchange and in the way Tom Hanks is able to tell a story, a tribute to Lovell's piloting skills.

If you're able to find the video, it's a great watch.
