Can being dive qualified open up more shore billets?

Not true, there is a dive qual that submariners can get. One of the guys in my NSI class was dive qualed Navy style to check the sub prior to underway. I don't know what he had to do, but he was a sub ET (non-nuke) that had a dive pin and did that stuff.
You're right.

They get a SCUBA qual, not Deep Sea. (Scuba is like 4 or 5 weeks, Deep Sea is twenty, but officers im sure get teh 1st class and master diver course too, so its even longer...)

Deep Sea (what Thisguy was talking about with BDO)

SCUBA (what etnuclearsailor wants...)

I think the bottom line is that the Navy will send you to X school if they require you to have skills in X, and not because you want to have skills in X, or think it would be otherwise neat-o.
Ahh, my friend...you obviously haven't worked the system. Once you figure out the ins and outs, it's actually pretty easy to get the schools you want.

So my TAD to "Porn Star Academy" might be approved?

The only duty that sub divers have is to perform a security swim before the sub leaves port. They check out the ship to make sure that nobody has put any type of tracking device on the sub or done anything that could damage it as it gets underway (put chains on the screw).

This school is only available to enlisted non-nuke sailors. Most nukes I have met would be to damn fragile to finish the training anyway. That, and they would get their Dungeons & Dragons cards all wet when they get in the water.

Jokes aside, why would the Navy spend tons of money to train a nuke and have him break himself at dive school? Nukes are plenty busy getting ready to get underway when it is time for a security swim anyway. The duties would conflict.

Really? That's it? John was a diver...on a sub. I'm sure he would disagree with your assessment.

Bad gouge. Dive school is open to nukes, both officer and enlisted. On my last boat there were 2 dive qualified enlisted nukes. All subs are required to have a certain number of dive qualified individuals one of whom must be an officer (and unless this individual is the CHOP he is nuclear trained as well).

I'm trying to find some justification for asking my command (the NROTC unit) to send me to Dive school for SCUBA training. I had figured I could take advantage of my AD status and go TAD to dive school, but I'm hearing nothing encouraging from the senior enlisted advisor. I wanted to be able to say "going to dive school will enable me to do ____" in order to convince my CO that it would be useful training.
That was the point of my original question..

If you really want to go to dive school I would recommend that you do as much of the leg work as possible (find out class dates, availabilty, take care of any special physicals, etc). This way when you go to your command not only is it obvious that you are dedicated to doing this but also it would require very little work on their part.

This is only judging from my admittedly limited experience during my 3/C cruise on a fast boat, but it sounded like the Academy folks were the ones who got the hookup to go to dive school, because they could get the orders written to go prior to starting Nuke school. I remember asking about whether or not ROTC guys could get the same deal and it sounded like it would be a ton more work. Not impossible, but a lot harder. Good luck.

I'm trying to go as an OC before I graduate. I figured if I can take care of my summer credits before going, I'd be gravy, Trouble is, the command (the NROTC unit) doesn't have money to send its sailors to various schools.
