so I'm going to give a presentation on the history of callsigns in the Naval Aviation for a History class of mine and I was curious if anyone would want to share any good callsign stories. it could be yours or any you have heard of along the way. thanks.

The Blues once had a pilot named Packer. His c/s........Fudge.

It was even listed in their program. I don't know how it got by the political correctness police. Especially since it was the post-tail hook era.

From this link: LCdr. Dave Parsons, also a former editor of Approach, earned the callsign "Hey Joe" during one cruise. This slang term refers to the native vendors that appear on the piers and on street corners in foreign ports, selling souvenirs. Parsons garnered the nickname for his success in designing and selling t-shirts and posters

What ever happened to Hey Joe? He hasn't been around since August. He always had great posts.

I've seen a "Caulk" Blocker, "Cluster" Fluck, and "Cunny" Linquist. Sometimes the name based ones are teh ghey, but they can be gems as well.

I may be one of the exceptions to that rule..

But then again, my last name is Bates..

My old callsign "Tree" thankfully got overruled by the Navy Callsigns.

My husband's had the same one since flight school too. I think he's too old for it to change now. :icon_smil


A friend of ours has the call sign Rain Man. One night in a drunken stupor he urinated on his passed out buddy.

Baja....went off roading in a jet and got stuck in the mud after sliding off the runway.

Former CO of China Lake was "Spurt" Seaman.

My last name is " Boring", how much fun are people gonna have with that?


The heirarchy of callsigns is 1. real or percieved shortcoming or doing something dumb 2. Physical abnormality 3. then play on the name.

Im sure if your name is boring then you will do something dumb or have some physical defect your squadron will find entertaining.

I don't know for sure, but I think he meant that his last name really was "Boring" as in "Hi, my name is Joe Boring"

When I saw the Blue Angels last year I liked their flight surgeon's. Her last name was Johnson, call sign "No."
