Are the any boxing gyms on base or in the area? Is anyone else on here a boxer? Or anyone interested?
I know boxing used to be big in the Navy, but it doesnt seem that way anymore :(

Most SNFOs and SNAa would probably refrain from doing something that get them NPQ'd...getting knocked unconcious, even for a few seconds will get you grounded.

I've been wondering the same thing.

As far as getting knocked out, usually only people that actually fight or spar guys that hit like pissed off Mack trucks tend to get knocked out.

As Schnugg said, proceed with caution.

Yes Boxing is a part of many military academy and officer training programs as it teaches mental and physical toughness as well as instills a win at all costs instinct that is neccesary.

On the other side its a sport that very regularly involves real physical trauma and damage. Broken and cracked ribs, damage to eye sockets and jaws, and the big whammy concussions all add up to a dangerous guantlet to be running for something that is mearly a hobby. There is good reason you dont see a lot of Old Boxers. This one would be right up there with Rugby and Austrialian Rules Football as sports that the likely hood of a military career ending injury are just to high for most people.

If you wanna get a workout there are many other combative martial art forms that have a much lower chance of injury that you may want to look into. Not saying you cant do it and be fine, hell I used to box but I saw the writing on the wall when I started looking at some of the injurys that were common enough. Now I just stick with MCMAP and Chinese Martial Arts if I want to get my fight on.

I hear you loud and clear. Fortunatly, in 9 years of boxing and 20 fights, I have only had a few nose bleeds and black eyes (many more black eyes).
So, since Roy Jones is from Pensacola, Im sure there are gyms. Just wondering if there were any on base.

All that is true, but if it's just a hobby, you also don't have to actually fight.

But I'm just saying it all comes down to personal risk management and if you're smart about it boxing isn't really more dangerous than other combatives can be.

Personally, right now it'd be a step up for me if base gyms have a few heavy bags hung up.

You could just work the bags and stay in shape. Just be safe about what you do.

Pensacola Boxing Academy right near NASP. They also teach my favorite, Brazilian Jujitsu but they are quite far from where I live :(

I did a few months at PBA when I was at NASP. Great training and had a blast sparring. But it got too expensive. So I switched to just hitting the bag at Corry.

Also, I ran into Roy Jones as I was leaving the Winn Dixie off of Mobile Hwy and Michigan. Great guy. A lot taller and bigger in person. Friggin Winn Dixie of all places.
