Howzabout this morsel: saw in Jane's Defence Weekly that USN let a contract to install IRST (infrared search & track) gear on all F-18Es & Fs. This will be a real aid to their air-to-air capabilities vs a/c like the Mig29M & SU-35. Remember the Indian AF w/ 29's kicked some USAF F-15 butt a couple of years ago when IF Migs & USAF Eagles held an exercise in India. Apparently, the Russian IRST gear was the big difference maker. I stand ready to be corrected if others are better informed, as obviously I wasn't there.

IRST gear had nothing to do with Flankers kicking Eagle ass....more like AF O-8s snd O-9s hyping up the disparity.

Not according to AW&ST. You're saying that AF was poor-mouthing the F-15 in order to get more F-22s? If so, it didn't work too well.

Flanker is a Su-27 or variant with same basic shape.

Here's a Su-30MK doing a demo.

AW&ST isn't always right.......

The Cope India exercise and it's results had a lot more to it than IRST's and USAF Generals getting their panties in a wad. We had never held a real exercise with the Indians before and the first Cope India had a big learning curve for everyone involved. Lack of prep, mistaken assumptions, small numbers, limited support and the always convenient exercise training rules were several of the many reasons the exercise played out the way it did. Another big one was the simple fact that the Indians really hadn't played war with anyone in a very long time and had developed effective tactics on their own over the years. Surprise, surprise.......

IRST is only a tool, one of many. While the Russians have developed some really cool weapons they ain't the be all to end all. With all the tools available to us we have plenty to kick anyone's ass that decides to mess with any time soon.

I got a great cure for boredom. Throw on everything you own, hike out 3 miles, stare through your AR-15 (M16) sights all day until you have sweated so much you have downed about 5 liters of water and only pissed once, then hike back home. Sleep 4 hours then rinse and repeat ad nauseum.

When you finally think you might get 8 hours of sleep, get excited, then sit in a room for several hours doing nothing until you are giddy like a little kid, only to find out that you are still waiting on the word and only get 3 hours of sleep to show for it.

Boredom cured.

According to the article it's gonna be fitted to the ctrline tanks. Wonder what that's gonna do to look up and overall FOV. Prolly get FNAEBd for jetting it if you had to.
