So what's the rule on shipping boats? On moving them yourself? I was doing some research for a question someone had ab moving entitlements & all it did was get me having questions myself, we've got a 24 foot Cabin Cruiser so it obviously isn't something that we can ship but is it possible that if we don't go over our weight allowance w/ the movers that we can add some of the weight fr the boat & get paid for a DITY? What ab fuel costs? Anyone know what the standard reimbursement per mile is? Towing this behemoth my husband only gets ab 14 miles per gallon...

After a much lengthier explanation than yours the lady at personal property told me plain and simple that's a toy and the gov won't ship it unless you live on it.

So here's the trick, DITY move, U-Haul truck, pack some of your stuff inside it (so you can justify the truck rental of course), hook up the boat and away you go. Now, your husband will probably be driving the truck and you a car, so you guys probably need to find a friend to drive the second car....if you don't PM me, I have another trick I did to solve that problem but take a little more explaining.

EDIT: Yes, hook up the boat trailer to the U-Haul truck.

Are you saying hook up the boat to the U-Haul truck?? I'm only asking because before too long, this will be a situation we run into as well. I don't mind moving it myslef at my own cost, but it would be cool to get paid to move it.

I can't speak for CONUS, but when I asked about moving from OCONUS, they said they would pay for shipping it up to your weight limit. It also had to fit into a shipping container. I know that doesn't help w/ your specific question, but thought I'd put it out there.

See that explanation of it being a toy sounds odd b/c if it's a boat that is under 14 feet, it can move on the moving truck w/ your personal goods.

Wrong, she told you bad gouge.

Boats and motorcycles are considered recreational vehicles and the government will ship them as long as you don't exceed your weight allowance. You can do it DITY or have it shipped if it is over 14'.
For DITY, they will pay you for the weight so that should offset your fuel costs (plus you will be able to ensure the safety of the boat).

The thing that burns me is that my recreational Corvette will not be payed for even if I stay within weight allowances since it is a car, but if I had a boat....

Why would she tell me that??.., although from what I read I don't know if I would ship it, hooking it to the back of the rental truck costs nothing.

Most hideous mode of transport on the island. I'm sure they're equally fond of it in Newport.

BTW: Danimal lives like two doors down from me (in Whidbey anyway). What are those two up to? Did he screen?
