What about "swim qual the Air Force?"

Or "send an email to the detailer" (monitor for you USMC types)

Or shipboard "submit a change to the airplan"

You're looking at shock waves, all right. But as a few guys have said, the aircraft itself doesn't have to be going above M=1 to produce shock waves. As you approach M=1, some of the airflow going over the wings (or other protrusions) exceeds M=1 locally, and as it decelerates below M=1 on the back side of the protrusion or wing, a shock wave is produced. You can see the shock wave because of the change in the air's index of refraction as it is compressed through the shock.
As the aircraft gets closer to M=1, the shock moves aft to the trailing edge. You don't get a leading edge shock until the aircraft itself is going supersonic. Check this link out for some good figures - they line up with the photos pretty well. http://aerodyn.org/HighSpeed/shock.html

nice find...someone posted a link to the pics of what appears to be the same airshow and actually the same moment of that airshow, but from a different angle...

that is just amazing though...it looks dangerous with all the ships on the water...he looked low enough to hit a mast if it got in the way...

now I wish we could get a video from the pilot's perspective!

He's coming through the show's center section line so there's no one to hit. It's always kept clear of distractions/obstructions.
