How much more would you have willingly paid in taxes to get a full up ADS system installed in every military aircraft that would also need to deal with additional security requirements?
At the end of the day, I really don’t see ADS as preventing this collision.
Maybe we should have focused on ATC manning instead.
We should, but that’s going to take many years to fix.
Yeah kinda disagree on this one. ADSB In/Out and/or functional TCAS systems on military aircraft would have enhanced SA and potentially initiated comms with ATC or minimized confusion. The difference in taxes would be a rounding error on our tax returns.
I’ll probably be the naysayer here. Google showing me a $50k per integrated ADS system. Yes, other systems are cheaper, but touching the 1553 bus will likely increase the cost. That puts the cost around $500M across the fleet not including any O and M. Not exactly budget dust.
I still hold that ADS may have saved the day, but more a contributing vice causal factor. Given the choice, I would rather spend $500M on controllers and risk identification vice additional boxes. In the end, I believe the tools were there to avoid the collision without adding a black box.
No issues there, It’s fine to disagree. The USG FY25 was programmed for a 7.5T budget. $500,000,000 / $7,500,000,000,000 = 0.0000667… Repeating of course…but like I stated, a rounding error in the bean counters budget.
I also agree that ATC manpower and training is also a solution that needs investment.
What a wonderful explanation of how we rationalized ourselves into massive budget deficits. "Rounding error" after "rounding error" stacks up, but of course you know that...
On the other hand, I think spending $500M on ATC and military fleetwide ADS-B improvements is a great idea. Take the $1B out of say, ICE's budget, and you've got yourself a win/win. But of course, government spending doesn't work that way, because No You Can't.
