Best Cell Phone Coverage in Whidbey Island

How is the cell phone coverage on/around Whidbey Island, specifically Cingular? I plan on living in/around Oak Harbor, does the island have decent coverage or just around the towns? I am coming up on my contract renewal date and do not want to stay with a company if they have bad/no coverage in the area.

I know Cingular has a dead spot around the pass, but it's not a big issue and I wouldn't changes carriers because of it. I've used Verizon for years w/o problems, but I'm also not on the phone 24/7 like some people.

I don't live on Whidbey but over here across the Sound I get a lot of failed and dropped calls with Cingular. If you can, change to Verizon. Everyone I know who uses Verizon loves it and has zero problems.

To add to what Brett says, I had AT&T when I was on Whidbey and also lost the signal around Deception Pass. I don't think any company has good coverage in that area due to the steep hills and winding roads.

I had sprint and didn't really ever lose signal coverage unless I was down at the south end of the Island around Freeland and Langley.

I originally had Sprint and lost coverage in some of the surrounding areas. I now have Verizon and don't have any problems.

On Whidbey ... it's VERY location-specific. Being line of sight and all ... PLUS, we have a lot of NIMBYs on 'da Island who will not accept a cell tower anywhere near them even if it resembles a harp seal.

The base has a Sprint franchise, so you would think they were the best ... but in my locale, they are no better than Cingular. The local Deputies/EMS folks use Verizon, so you would think it would be the best ...

I borrowed a Sprint, Verizon, briefly bought a T-Mobile, and have Cingular. Tried them all ... I've been with AT&T/Cingular and the "old" GTE since day one on NUW --- nearly 20 years of cellular hell.

The result ... best to worst:

1. Cingular, Verizon, Sprint (no particular order)
4. T-Mobile

They're all spotty in some areas. And I think the NAS might interfere with some of the frequencies on a random basis. They deny it ... but what can you say when you walk out in the morning and the automatic garage doors are both open ... ??? :)

Sorry, that was me. Didn't you get the brief that your beach is the designated target for burning out our JX pods? ;)

Cingular works fairly well. From what i understand the best total coverage is Nextel (now merged with Sprint). I live just up the road from where A4's lives and while you can get Cingular pretty well at his place, it sucks at mine.

It's best the squadron doesn't know your cell number, just so you know....

edit: I should add that my phone is a POS and other people's phones have worked at my house fairly well.

Good morning,

We will be PC'sing to NAS Whidbey Island in February 2013. I was wondering what was the current status on mobile phones now? which company provides a better service?
