BEST BATTLE RIFLE ??? *GASP* as in (another) "Gun Thread"

M1/M14 are far more tedious and expensive to build, but I think they're much easier to maintain than an M-16. An M-16 is such a complex firearm. One of the few gas powered firearms without a gas piston.

What about the Springfield Trapdoor? Think about the advantage you had back in the day carrying that beast while your enemy is still "ball and capping" it.

45-70 gov't.....man, imagine getting hit with a 500 grain slug traveling roughly at 1700 fps? ouch..... more approprietly....DEAD.

What is the prevailing opinion as to the best battle rifle of the past century???
Some criteria: full-power cartridge only -- no intermediates -- from 1903 (alright, 1895 onward :) ) onward --- no R&D stuff --- only issue production rifles, any organized military world-wide. It could even be a bolt action ... as "best" is pretty subjective and meant to be "best" during it's time and place in history relative to when it was in service. In other words, the M1 Garand was probably the "best" battle of the '40's .... etc, etc.

Come'on guys .... RTFQ. 1895 onward .... We can do black powder on another (*gasp*) firearms thread .... AW :) smiley for you ....

What is the difference between "battle" and "intermediate" ???
