A former First Sea Lord and retired Admiral went after the BBC for not calling HMS Queen Elizabeth a "ship." Silly blackshoe. Carriers are boats! On a related note, it seems Her Majesty elected to skip that prissy French champagne, and christen her namesake with a bottle of Bowmore single malt Scotch. I wholeheartedly approve.

Never heard of anyone bouncing in preparation for the "ship"!

I think a schooner of Guinness Stout would be even better!;)

Admiral Lord West must be a friend of Skeeterman. BTW... very cool with the single malt.

Anybody know the reason for 2 islands?

Would it be because, they wanted an island aft for recoveries, but it would be blocked by the ski jump for launches, so they added a second island forward enough to have visibility over the ski jump for the navigation bridge and launches? Just a thought...

I read that the front one was for driving the boat ship and the aft one was for flight ops.

But they have to switch when they are backing down.

I heard that in the smoke pit so it must be true. Tell all your friends.

I'm sure it has a backup camera with the little lines so you don't hit anything. I'm still trying to figure out the personal navigation system to get around the ship......

Granted, it's no NIMITZ... but a 65,000 "tonne" aircraft carrier with a crew of only ~680? Sounds like mucho port & starboard watchstanding (and/or lots of unmonitored automation)!

The two islands are for the engine exhaust stacks as she is a conventional powered carrier.

QE is a big boat. Laid out more like an amphib on the inside than a CVN as far as passageways and such. The manning number is still in flux. Last count I believe was 780ish for ships company. Then the Airwing of whatever size and makeup is deploying. She is a nice ship. Largest berthing compartment for the troopers is an 8 man. Way nicer than our boats. The bar on board offers a nice touch as well.

I can see it now... "Boiler room, stack watch - our Chap in the groove,,, blow tubes NOW"!

Those of you who have operated from the now retired, black oil powered 'boats' know what I mean. Nothing like the blinding, choking, acrid stench of cumulo-stackgasus, to obscure the lens/landing area, screwing up the approach (and your respiratory system)... all to the delight of the "Blackshoe Snipe Mafia"!
