Can't seem to find the thread that had mentioned a place that has great barbecue in Newport. If the person who mentioned it earlier could tell me where it was I would appreciate it. :)

I don't recall the thread either, but I went there the other day. It's called Becky's Bbq. It's the only place on the island I've found with bbq, but in Warwick there is a place I actually like quite a bit better called Smoky Bones (I think) and that is only 15-20 mins away. Let me know if you need directions. Are you already in the area?

Nope, I'll be heading up there tomorrow from norfolk. From what I hear it's about a 10 hour drive. Hey, do you know a cheap hotel up there? Was planning on staying overnight in a hotel and then checking in in the morning.

While not BBQ, a good place to visit is called DeAngelos. It's right up the road from the base. Go out main gate, make a left and follow that up to the light. The place is straight across the intersection. They have awesome steak and cheese sandwiches. I haven't had any from Phili, but those at DeAngelos are probably the best I've had in the country.

See if you can make a reservation at the BEQ. Decent rooms, especially for one night and a helluva lot less than you'll pay out in town. If not, try the Navy Lodge. There's also a Motel 6 right there down the street from the main gate.

There is also a Travelodge a few blocks away. I stayed there when I checked in because it was the cheapest place around. All I can say is you get what you pay for!

If you cannot get a reservation at the CBQ, then go for the Navy Lodge as mentioned by S. Wilkins. It's about a mile from the base and near the intersection that has DeAngelos.

Motel 6 will have the convenience of being across the street from the base, but it is, for some odd reason, built across from the water treatment/sewage plant. On certain days, that area will smell like roses.

I was stationed in Newport for 4+ years (departed Aug 2000), so feel free to ask me any questions because I may be able to help out.

The Navy Lodge is no longer where you stated, flynsail. It is now on base near the NEX (looking out toward the carriers). The area you mentioned is now a public park (completely open, no buildings). I had heard before that it used to be there, but it has since moved.

Thanks for correcting my bad gouge! They were renovating some of the rooms at the Navy Lodge when I left. Guess that was a waste of money since they relocated.
