B-24 Liberator takes off from Akron Airport

I saw the EAA's B-17 flying in for a warbirds expo. Definitely an impressive airplane just by itself.

Can you imagine forming up on a 100 ship formation over England in WWII, not knowing how many of the birds will come back? For sure they issued a pair of brass ones back in the days...

Nah, you had to grow your own. A lot of good men did, and paid the ultimate price. I for one am glad these old warbirds are still flying to honor them.

How do these airplanes make it into private hands? Now and then I see these privately owned A4s and the sort and I wonder how they do it. Did they just go to the government with a blank check?

Collings' birds

Gentlemen,

There are no words to describe what it is like to ride
in the Collings' B-17 and B-24. I have been privilidged to
ride both. I still dream about it......

I realize most of you are "into" pointy nosed birds
with afterburners. I can't speak to that much....
BUT, I CAN tell you riding a B-17 or B-24 WILL generate
an erection. Maybe not better than sex, but REAL close.....

Blue skies,
Owen

My grandfather was USAAC as a tailgunner in a B-24. One hell of an airplane. He actually got shot down over Germany. I'd love to fly in one eventually...

Same with my father-in-law. Radio Operator / Gunner

The legacy of the B-24 got short shrift because it wasn't as sexy as the B-17.
