I've read that the top 5% of the TBS class has their commissions augmented to the Regular Marine Corps. Is this number accurate and what does augmentation do for you?

Where did you read that?

When you get your commission, you're USMCR. You have an EAS date and when that date comes around you're released from active duty and sent into the IRR. When you get augumented you get your EAS changed to 999999 meaning that you hold your commission and you stay on active duty until you request for a discharge or the Prez decides that he doesn't need you anymore.

So, if you're planning on being a lifer, you need to get augumented sometime before your EAS rolls around. I'm not 100% sure on how the augumentation process goes, back in my day when you picked up Capt you were automatically augumented but then it changed to a board. Kinda like the one we're all going through now where the board looks at your qualifications and potential and then decide if the want you to stay. Not sure what it is now.

You can find more info at www.usmc.mil.

I'm not sure on the percentages but yes a portion of the top graduates get someting called meritorious augmentation upon graduation. The rest of the class will wait until your about a senior captain.

War were declared.
It is in fact the top 5% that are meritoriously augmented. Everyone else goes through the board USMCAlumni mentioned around the same time they are promoted to Captain. It's NOT when you are a senior captain.
