Moths are ridiculously awesome, however if you want really sick try sailing 505 in 10+. However as Bubba says big boat is the way to go...Nothing beats a Gulf Stream crossing on the way to Bermuda in 30 knots gusting higher as you ride down the back side of a wave on the verge of out of control!!!
Only wish I could make more memories and kill more bain cells by doing Newport-Bermuda this year, but Kingsville is keeping me in South Texas instead of the Swizzle Inn.

The fact that the 505 has the ability to jibe the centerboard and basically allow you to crab into the wind for better VMG is just amazing. I'm working my way into skiffs right now, starting with a 29er. When mine comes in we will have the largest 29er fleet on the East Coast outside of Annapolis with a whopping 3:thumbup_1.

That being said, the 49er is also an amazingly fast boat, so is the 18ft Skiff.

Oh, and nothing compares to a planing hulled dinghy in a blow. You can keep your keelboats. Racing a keelboat is like racing a motorhome:icon_wink.

This is real sailboat racing, 30kts 3 feet from the water:

I'm a big woman guy. I like'em big and fast
Fixed. Sorry that I'm late. Demerits to the rest of you. Hangin curveball like that and nobody yanked it the opposite way. Pathetic...:D

Scoob's last sailing class was one of these...points to whoever knows it without cheating...

International 14? I'd be 100% if I could see the stern. Used to be a guy at the yacht club who had one about ten-twelve years ago... and weren't they in that movie Wind, about the Cup?

I concur, a little of a weird angle but it looks like the boys from Pegasus on the I-14...Yes they were featured in the movie wind as they sailed around Newport Harbor practicing.

Not in the last two years or so. Just too busy and too far from the boats. I was a sailing fool in college however.:)

Raced all sorts of stuff in the past however...Lasers (1&2), Force 5's, 420's...also done quite of bit of crewed racing. Melges C Scows, random J-Boats etc...I started out grinding and working the deck, but mostly ended up as a tactician and helm. I love stopwatches and relative bearing!

Scows are pretty big up in the Finger Lakes. That's actually where I got my start.

I know there is probably very little chance of you getting to Norfolk, but if you do we have a pretty good dinghy series going on every week. Afterwards we break out the grill and the beer flows freely. At one point in the fall we had a 5o5, a 49er, a Laser 2, a Tasar (odd boat) and two 29ers on the line, as well as your typical 4twinkies, Lasers, and sunfish. It is pretty good times.

Always thought Laser2s looked fun, but never got to try 'em. And 49ers. :D

Laser2s are a lot of fun.

From what I've heard of racing 49ers from a guy who campaigned one for the Olympics is that you are always on the edge of control, and its all about who can keep the boat working and still make those sound tactical decisions on the water that win. I'd like to get on one, but I think I need to get my skills up on a smaller skiff before I try to go kill myself. 30kts on the water in a sailboat is F'ing fast!

Yeah, same with that video you posted before - wonder what it's like to hit the water when you go over at that speed.

Then again, for comedic value nothing beats the starting line/any mark rounding for an Opti regatta. Swarms of 8-12year olds slamming into each other and screaming. I miss it. :D
