Came across this ASW game, didn't think much of it until I looked at the Operator's Manual for the TACCO/PPC/Sensor Operators.

Man, somebody put a lot of effort into this. I haven't played the game, but it looks like I could relive some old missions. (If I could remember all of the tactics)!

Game info at http://www.subguru.com/

There's a reason why the game is so close to the real thing. It's made by a company called Sonalysts. They have many contracts with the Navy and do a lot of real world stuff.

Is that a Sonalysts product? They did some good work on one of those Tom Clancy sub games - 688, I think. The sonar gear and game-play was pretty accurate. I know the subject game was talked about a few months back on here. Has anyone actually played it? Might be a good tool for jet guys to validate their platform choice. ;)

If we've learned anything from the Virtual Blue Angels thread, this game might be a way for prospective Navs and no Ps to show up at their fleet squadrons ready for their MC boards. Screw upgrading PQS when you can perfect your skillz online.

Yeah, they made 688, and a couple of the Jane's branded games. I know a couple Sonalysts contractors and I have talked a little about their company with them.

I have a copy of 688I. Its fun but WAY too slow in terms of a game. I have always had a special place in my heart for the Jane's series of games though.

688i was a fine game. I had a good time playing it.

They also worked with Jane's on Fleet Command.

Jane's used to put out some good simulation products. Too bad they got out of the market.

Fleet Command was like a poor man's Harpoon, although it was fun and you could do multi-player. I waited for the various developers of the next generation Harpoon to unfvck themselves, but have given up. Any of you ever done the Harpoon thing? Screw the Virtual Blues, a good Harpoon game could last all day.

the P-3 cockpit models aren't very accurate, nor are the sensor stations. But hey, that's cool, it doesn't need to be 100% accurate. I downloaded the demo, you can play a sub or a helo, tried it once, got bored and moved on. If i obtained a free copy of the full game, i might put a bit more effort into it.

Thing is, I HATE doing sims at work and I can't see a terribly compelling reason to sim at home. I'd much rather look at porn.

What, the FE isn't asleep, the 3P isn't trying to kill the crew, the PPC isn't asleep in the rack, no grease pencil markings on the windscreen of who has the lead for how many times you can freak the NAV out when he keeps asking to get a "SAC check?" and the crew readily obliges?, and of course the inoperable auto pilot? :D And to make it perfect, the bag of chips sitting between the pilots?

I'd much rather look at porn.
Rep points for priorities in order!

There was a group that did a modification to Fleet Command to make it much more realistic. Sensors and weapons behaved closer to real life (i.e. no 360 degree radar on a Tomcat). I enjoyed Fleet Command and played it multi-player a few times. It was fun. I hated going against a Kirov battlecruiser. That thing was sick.

Never played Harpoon, but I was waiting for Harpoon 4 to come out... guess that project died.

would that be the bag that the FE spills all over the place when the PPC comes back to the flight station and chirps the fire warning to see if everyone is awake? That bag of chips?

Replace bag of chips with spit cup or giant cup full of 'spent' sunflower seeds.

(I knocked my own spit cup all over my FE's leg about 2 months ago after an FCF. Just trying to explain what chew is to a foreigner is hard enough, much less "that's all spit, mucous, and tobacco" in another language. I bought him a sixer the next day.)

Yeah, I hear you .... I always preferred going against a Kashin myself. Note the SAM mounts fore and aft (missiles on the rails) trying to track me as I rolled up over the top of the SOB .... :)

They don't expect much do they? That's worth a case.
