praxis i agree people die of asthma, im not saying they dont. but you have to have serious asthma to die. he doesnt, its a minor thing, but he still has it. and no one can train enough for ocs. we all no that even those of us who havent gone. i know high school football is nothing compared to this but its some basis. we played on the same team, had two a days in 105 degree weather with pads on where its 120 degrees 5a texas football. i know its not the same but its serious **** for a high school kid and he made it through that. i know its not even close to what he will encounter in virgina but he can do what he has to. oh yeah, the research i liked. good job.

praxis man its not me. i promise you i can see how it looks like its me, but i am and always was the kid that had to have the final word in everything. i will argue about anything and everything especially when it comes to my friends and family. and yeah i know i have to work on that before may or im done for and will be sent home so im trying. but seriously not me, just hardheaded stubborn ass.

Tanya...yes in your corps...the Captain told the whole friggin' gathering at a pre-shop function...So while I agree if the guy still has asthma he's out, don't try and convince anyone that there aren't Marines who lie, etc. While its dishonorable...it still happens. I believe in the code too, but come on everyone's heard the BS recruiters tell you while you're in HS...if it ain't lying it's awfully close. So while I agree that being a person of honor and integrity is the pinnacle of the corps, I'm also in tough with the reality that people ---- up now and again.

Once again I'm not sayin that this guy would be right by lying, but also like an above post said if he's still asthmatic he'll never make it through OCS anyway.
 
Well... it sounds like your mind is already made up. Let me remind you that you are the one who posted the question in the first place as to whether your friend should lie or not. If you're going to ask for other folks' opinions, don't get pissy just because its not the answer you wanted. Everybody on this thread responded with what they think is the best course of action. The question begs to be asked as to why you even asked in the first place.
I was also curious about something else. Seems like you're the type that would be in the Corps of Cadets at A&M since you're thinking of becoming an officer. I thought in the Corps, you would be enrolled in NROTC Marine Option rather than going to PLC or OCS.
 
In my mind, there are two issues here:

1. Should he lie?
Chad says that everyone has lied, so its no big deal.

2. If he gets there will he make it?
Chad says that he survived high school football while taking his medication so 6-10 weeks of intense training without the medication at OCS will be okay.

Does this sum it up?
 
praxis did you not read what i wrote that its not even close im just saying he has done stuff before that asthmatics shouldnt do. and yeah you would think i would be in corps, but im not because that wasnt really the option a year ago. i dont think coming out of high school i couldve been able to go through that. i wasnt mature enough then and who knows if i will be this summer.

Praxis: I believe so.

The first is a moral issue, cannot add to what has been said.

The second is a "medical" issue, that only a medical officer, or someone else as learned. Playing high school football does not answer the question of how one would perform in 120 degree temps with tear gas in air without a mask; or how one react with fumes from willie peter, thermite or fulminate of mercury filling the lungs and breathing passages, or should I say non-breathing passages. Or at angels 40 on 100% O2 and your lose that O2 line.

I would vote for the medical officer making the decision.
 
ok well i understand what everyone is saying and where you guys are coming from. my question has been answered. and i dont support lying, it might seem like that but i really dont. and another question, is asthma really the only sickness that automatically gets you disqualified from the military and why its such a big deal?

Does he have the ability to make it through ocs and tbs with his condition. Also what mos is he interested in. His condition will come out in the aviation world. In the Hypo Chamber he will have problems. And in the Grunt world a 25 mile hump is brutle.
 
buckeye im not sure what he wants right now. but from all of what i see and hear its gonna be pretty impossible to do anything.

aggiechad, asthma is not something you want in somebody who needs to operate in a high stress, physically demanding environment where you can die in a few seconds(like infantry, aviation, etc.). Especially like in some aviation platforms where if he has an asthma attack there's nobody to back him up.

And asthma is NOT the only condition that automatically disqualifies you from the military. Others include being blind in both eyes, having developed a habit of compulsive lying, being actively gay, missing both legs or arms, not having a brain, among others.

OK but seriously there are other fairly common things like heart murmurs(I hear this is something waiverable if very minor and depending on type of murmur), eyesight obviously(also waiverable under right circumstances), hearing(again with the possibliity of a waiver), not being too freaking tall, etc.
