Arctic/Antarctic Service

As a Middie I got to spend a few days above the Arctic circle on a fast attack boat during a summer cruise. We got our Bluenose (think Shellback with more of an ice theme) but didn't come, thankfully, anywhere close to spending the required 28 consecutive days required for the medal.

For arctic service, it's a ribbon, and I believe it's 28 consecutive or non-consecutive days above the circle. My first deployment was to Kef, the ribbon was relatively new at that point, and the CO made it a point to have our flights above the circle specifically noted. Pretty much every flyer came away from the deployment with the ribbon.

He just wants the cool blue medals.

I've got an Arctic Service Ribbon - NBD. :D When the Kef deployments were a regular thing, pretty much every aircrew got one because you were operating up there so much. I think it was 30 missions, or something. I remember one fly-by of an American sub who had breached the ice IVO the north pole and people were scampering around on the ice - that was kind of cool.

Sounds like the OP needs a gig with NOAA vice the military if he wants to hang out with penguins and polar bears though.

join the New York Air National Guard's 109th Airlift Wing.

That's your best bet, actually. I know three guys in that wing that I did advanced with in 31. They posted some of their pics on facebook and it looks pretty badass, but I wouldn't want to stay there for too long.

OR you can go join the Sea Sheppard Conservation Society and hitch a ride on the Steve Irwin!!

Those guys are such nuts! I haven't kept up with the latest news on their anti-whaling endeavors. Wonder what they're up to...

You can land C-130's in the snow for the NY Air Guard ...

C-130 with skis???

Flew with them once in my old ROTC days. They did some cool stuff.

Unfortunately, all my deployment missions were much closer to the equator than the North Pole. Good to know if I ever get to go up north again though.

Worked with a meteorological guy and one 1310 (VXE-6)at NAR Whidbey who had the arctic service medal. The weather guy actually wintered over at McMurdo for 6 months and said the only good thing about it was he got to spend the next 2 1/2 years living in Christchurch. In fact, he was moving back there as soon as he retired.

I can't image how cool it would be to be deployed in New Zealand, especially for that long.

Yup, I know two guys who fly (or flew) the Ski-130 with either VXE-6 or the 109th Airlift Wing, and they loved it. The guy in this blurb was a squadron mate in VP-8, then went to VXE-6, and followed the mission to the Air Guard with a lateral transfer. Antarctica doesn't look too bad, at least indoors.
