Apple s*cks.

Sorry for the random post, but I have been encountering this problem for a week now and I'm running out of places to vent. I have an Ipod. There, I admitted it. Now the free upgrade software for Itunes that Apple came out with causes the program to crash before it even opens. This is a brand spiffy new computer too, so its not my computers fault. So ok... computers s*ck I know the drill. But what really chafed my rear was when I called Apple to get some customer support. They wanted $50 to talk to me on the phone and sort the problem out. And that was only for the first call! $50 to fix the FREE software, downloadable on the internet for all to use, that as far as I'm concerned, is their fault its not working. After looking further into the problem I found that others were having a very similar problem, a few said they paid the $50 and also another fee for a second call and said they got it fixed. How do people get this money? All I want to do is listen to my music that I paid Apple good-legal-non-pirated-money to. Anyone who wants to chime in with some advice, some Apple bashing, or to just make fun of me for using the phrase "chafed my rear" go right ahead.

Is it possible to delete the software and reformat the Ipod to manufacturer's settings?

Here's some advice: A) post exactly what is happenening and maybe some of us Apple guys can help you out or B) post on the Apple Discussions Forum and seek help there. Unless the point of your post was to vent and not to seek help. I don't blame you for not wanting to fork over $50, I'd be pissed too. Good luck.

wow. Thanks yukon180. I honestly didn't expect to get this much help on airwarriors. Just goes to show you that help can be found in the most unlikeliest of places. Thanks again for both of your help.

The main problem is that Itunes just wont open. It gives me the standard microsoft error "This program is having problems and needs to close." Oh and in case I forgot Im running it on a windows machine. Thats really the whole problem. I have reinstalled a few times and get the same thing. I could try the reformat, but I have all of my CDs on here, around 100 or so, and I don't want to have to re-rip them all since I dont keep those on my harddrive. Plus the Ipod works fine, its mostly the Itunes software I have a beef with.

Does iTunes only crash when your iPod is plugged in? If so, the problem is usually with the iPod, and resetting it usually works. Definitely don't reformat, you'll find another solution. My advice is post on Apple Discussions if you haven't already and describe exactly what is happening. There are lots of smart people on their willing ot help for free. Good luck.

The problem WAS with the new version of Itunes. But thanks to yukon180 and the links he directed me to I was able to fix it. All hail yukon180! Huzzah! Huzzah!

Seriously.

Ok, in the spirit of the Apple discussion...my iPod is suckin'. It just dies after a half hour sometimes, and then it will sit for a few minutes and decide to start working again...for 5 minutes. After a couple more cycles of this it will play again for another half hour before the whole process starts over again.

And I do get the thing with plugging in the iPod to the computer and it just completely crashes the computer sometimes (blue screen of death kind of crash). I have an ipod mini and a Dell with windows xp.

Any advice? Should I reset my ipod before I send it away to Apple and see if that helps things at all?

I Hate Windows!!!

Windows OS + Mac software = mucho problemas...

Always.

I use iTunes, but an seriously thinking of switching back to a Windows based player, simply b/c Windows doesn't like programs designed for Mac/Linux/Unix and adapted for Windows.

One thing to do (this helped me) is every now and then, go through the Add/Remove Programs list in the control panel and get rid of stuff you don't use/need.

Absolutely. Download the most recent Apple iPod Firmware update software, run it, and restore the firmware to it's fresh, out of the box condition. Yes, you'll have to reload your entire music library, but since this has no affect on the tunes on your 'puter, this shouldn't be a big deal. It sounds as if the firmware on your iPod is a bit munched. It happens. If that don't fix it, then it's a hardware problem, and needs to be looked at by a certified Apple mo-kanic.
Good luck.
For those having problems with Windows software, I've got your solution: Buy a Mac! You'll never regret it, I promise. True, there aren't many games for the Mac, but if you're a gamer, buy a friggin X-Box or PS! Mucho better than PC gaming anyways! Just my $.02! ;)

nfo2b...I'd buy a Mac but for two things.

One is that they're so danged expensive. Two is that there isn't a Mac store here in town. Maybe I'll look into them when I go home for Xmas.

Um, make that three things...Three is that I grew up on Windows and Microsoft and I can't stand Apple's office products. I'd really like to run MS Office on a Mac, but from what I'm hearing here, it won't be optimal even with the patch that Apple offers so you can do just that.

So, Mr. Apple-lover, convince me.

Oh yeah, one other thing...I bought this thing for my truck where it plugs into either the XM or disc changer input and it plays the ipod directly through the stereo and charges it at the same time. I'm pretty sure I started noticing my problems shortly after I installed that thing. In case anyone is looking at those kits at Crutchfield or Best Buy, I'd recommend against them and just stay with the RF modulator.

Holy cow! That sounded really geeky and I just scared myself.

they have MS Office made specifically for mac no patch needed... and it runs perfectly... and is even nicer in terms of how its put together than the windows version of MS Office... prices are going down and theyre only going to get lower because apple is transitioning to intel processors so another plus is that theyre going to be even faster. as far as a lack of an apple store goes... u dont need one... i ordered my from their website and i have never had one problem with it and im not very easy on my comps... if u guys have anymore questions ill see if i can answer them

I run MS Office on my iBook and have never had a problem. No crashes, errors or any problems running the programs.
