I was just wondering if officers are allowed to have AOL Instant Messanger on their computers in their staterooms. It seems that AOL might be a little tougher to monitor for security reasons, but it would be a much better way to communicate than email. Anway, this is something I saw on a recent JAG episode, and I was just interested in what the real navy was like. Thanks again,

Well from my I.T. expierance AIM is very tough to stop from finding an open port in a firewall.
I am not sure about the Navy but I can tell you we have some serious problems stopping it where I work (cow spotted pc place)

From the ship that I came from (and the rest of the fleet I would imagine), using any sort of instant messenger is against regulations. I know on the E side of the ship it was punishable by mast. As an officer you should strive to set the example for your subordinates. If you know that it is something that is frowned upon then it is most likely not advisable even though your status as an officer may keep you from getting in trouble. As for the reason why it is not allowed, OPSEC! There is no way to keep track of what is said.
