Well living in Florida and having taken some meteorology classes at a Florida school a feel like an expert on the matter. From a meteorlogical standpoint Hurricances have ungodly amounts of energy to wield however they choose so to speak. A hurricane has far more energy then an atomic bomb, but as it has been pointed out that energy is distributed over a wider area and over a longer time, but hurricanes have no trouble spawning tornados and usually will produce enough of the right circumstances for many tornados to develop. The real damage hurricanes do is tidal surge and flooding, often the winds of a storm recieve the most attention when much the damage and death actually comes from flooding. If you want to just compare sustained windspeeds of a tornado and a hurricane though the tornado will always have higher. I'm sure most of you guys have heard this on the weather channel anyways though, but it makes me feel almost informed on that matter
