I was just wondering if anyone lived on the East coast where the hurricane is going to hit. My brother in law who flys CH-53's with the Marine Corps, is helping fly them further in land.

Yes, I'm in Norfolk. We're going to head out of town or find a shelter later today. There's a river at the end of my driveway, and my house is only about 6 ft. above the normal tide surge. We could have 6'-12' surge worst case, so we're getting out.

Wish me luck!

my brother lives in cincy, OH and said the other day there was a steady stream of jets flying over his house on the way to wright patterson afb to seek food and shelter from the cold.

I'm in NYC. we'r e not too sure if we're going to get slammed or if it's going to just miss us. Where I am i'm just a stone's throw away from the atlantic, so we may have to go if it hits full strength

I believe the tornado is a more powerful storm occurence, but the duration is not very long. Hurricanes, simply because of the size, can cause more collective damage though.

Also with Hurricanes you have to deal with the flooding. Tornados typically don't have that effect unless they knock out a dam or something.

Canes can also spawn tornados. So you get two for the price of one. Then lets not forget the flooding and big a$$ storm surge. So my vote would be for the cane.

Well living in Florida and having taken some meteorology classes at a Florida school a feel like an expert on the matter. From a meteorlogical standpoint Hurricances have ungodly amounts of energy to wield however they choose so to speak. A hurricane has far more energy then an atomic bomb, but as it has been pointed out that energy is distributed over a wider area and over a longer time, but hurricanes have no trouble spawning tornados and usually will produce enough of the right circumstances for many tornados to develop. The real damage hurricanes do is tidal surge and flooding, often the winds of a storm recieve the most attention when much the damage and death actually comes from flooding. If you want to just compare sustained windspeeds of a tornado and a hurricane though the tornado will always have higher. I'm sure most of you guys have heard this on the weather channel anyways though, but it makes me feel almost informed on that matter

Im just north of NYC but I'm driving to Ocean City, MD on Friday. I sure picked a perfect time for vacation (arrggg). Hopefully I won't be driving right through it.

And Perchul .... I'll give you a well deserved pat on the back for your thorough post (hehe). Do you think they would make us PT during a hurricane at OCS (HAHAHAHA). I could just see people trying to do pull-ups hanging from the bar like a flag (HAHAHA).

Peace,

Down here in daytona... we were praying for a hit on us, but it's not gonna happen. Woud've been cool - of course, if it had hit here, it would have been at least cat 4.

It's gonna tear the outer banks apart if it hits there. Feel sorry for those guys. Last one that came through opened up a new inlet, fortunately in a non-inhabited area.

Spin, I'm sure if the instructors had it their way in Quantico they would be doing a Rain Dance right now in hopes of the Hurricane parking itself offshore until we arrive.
Turbo, I feel your pain I've live in Florida to long now without having a good hurricane I love the mayhem.
