As I remember, that evacuation was necessary and took place a bit over 1 year after " .... all combat troops left Vietnam ...."? Just a question, that is all. Me memory is not exactly as it should be.

And after Congress pulled the plug on funding air support for the ARVN.

My dentist in Pensacola is the daughter of an RVN Army doctor. She & her family got out this way, and she has obviously made the most of the opportuities offered her by the USA. I think that's a general observation that can be said of most of the Vietnamese people who got out when the communists took over. We are better because they're here, and it makes me feel better for the time I spent in VN in the 60's. Parenthetically, I'm pleasantly surprised that "All Things Considered" gave us that credit - it's not an everyday occurence on NPR!

A Decent Interval

I picked up Frank Snepp's classic book, Decent Interval: An Insider's Account of Saigon's Indecent End Told by the Cia's Chief Strategy Analyst in Vietnam, in hardcover for $1.00 last week.

Fascintating read. He gives an amazing and inside account of our leaving Vietnam.

This was a great piece. Tonight's should be good, too. It's always nice to hear in the media about the humanitarian efforts the Navy does, rather than just killing babies.

About all I ever listen to on the radio is NPR. They have some serous gems on there, including this one. Thanks for the point out!

As an aside, NPR has a nice iPhone app where you can listen to these shows archived if you miss them on broadcast.

I love looking at photo's from decades ago. Look at the hair on those sailors! Those guys wouldn't have lasted a day at Al Asad. (Hint: I'm not a fan of modern "garrison" rules being enforced in combat zones).

BTW, it goes without saying that that is an amazing story, particularly the part about pushing the helos overboard to make room for more people and the people jumping out of the Chinook. I can't imagine something like that happening today.
