My brother has been extremely pro-active (hes applied to atleast five units in the past few months), just trying to figure out the best way to get him an in. It seems like face time is hard if you don't enlist, if the pilots gave every kid that wants to fly some face time, they would never have time to fly their planes!

the guy i talked to in minnesota just told me to call and set up a day to drive up and follow the guys around. i was pretty persistent with them, which i think they appreciate. i hear they also appreciate a nice bottle of scotch. in terms of getting a better "in", you either know someone or you dont. but nowadays being the general's son or daughter hurts you more than helps you (people are especially on the lookout for someone's kid getting in). just stay positive. i heard of a guy (recently) getting into a fighter unit (dont remember which) without knowing anyone, being out of state, and not having a ppl. he did really well on his afoqt, bat, pft and did well in his interview. he just struck them the right way and got in- as simple as that. biggest thing they say in the interview is to not be cocky but confident and feel as the the spot is yours to earn.

I have a military ID card. How bad of an idea would it be to say I am escorting my brother to the PX, and then just go hunting for pilots? The recruiters at this paricular unit have no desire to recruit pilots, so they wont escort my brother to anyone other than enlisted types.

Tell him to call any of the bases he is interested in applying to and ask when they will be accepting applications for UPT. I call tell you that most units have already closed their applications dates for 2003 and are in the process of interviewing for UPT as we speak. These positions however are not until fiscal year 2005 though. Almost all Air National Guard bases work by selecting UPT applicants 1-2 years before they will begin training. I do not believe that it is necessary to know someone in order to be selected for a pilot slot with the Air Guard. I just graduated in December of 2002 and began applying for UPT at different Air Guard units throughout the country. I have no connections with any of them and have no prior military service. As of today, I have two interviews, one with Texas’s 174th fighter wing, one with Niagara Falls, and I am currently in Hawaii where I just interviewed yesterday for a pilot slot with the Hawaii Air National Guard. It is possible. Tell him to apply.

cool, coming up to the Buffalo area then huh? Those tankers fly right over our campus all the time from Niagara falls. I think they're C-130's. If you're looking for fighters though, I think that base is in Syracuse (2hours from here). Good luck with all that.

I applied at Syracuse, they turned me down back in early July. The Falls flys the KC-135 and the Air Force reserves fly the C-130.
