AH-1W (Turkey) shootdown

Missile warning systems are your friend. PMA-272 has some really cool shit on the way too.
AUTO is your friend; flares are cheap.

The video reminds me of the Morphine 12 shootdown video from Iraq. The news story I saw it in showed the video first and it wasn't until I read further that I learned I was watching the death of a primary classmate.

Ugh, watching helo shootdown videos makes me happy that I can fly above a lot of that stuff most of the time. (Spent the morning watching mission videos of the Blackhawk shoot downs in Somalia and those were pretty brutal as well)...

PKK are our allies - yes? Turkey is our Allie and a NATO member. Why we don't tell Turkey to chill is beyond me.

Are Turkey's Whiskey pilots trained at our FRS?

Turks view the Kurds as terrorists. That's not going to change. It's real interesting that both of them are taking time out if their war against ISIS to kill each other while we have to watch and play nice with both sides and pretend it's not happening.

Russia is resurgent, the Turks are busy killing the Kurds that we're ostensibly friendly with.... there's a fucking Delorean around here somewhere.

No.

The Turks are fighting against the PKK, which is only one of the many Kurdish parties/groups/factions in the region. The PKK is a Turkey-based group with a 'unique' political 'philosophy' that was originally communist and now some sort of libertarian-socialist mishmash. We also happen to have designated them a terrorist group, rightfully so.

While many folks lump the Kurds into one big group they are split by country borders, with significant populations in Turkey, Iran, Iraq and Syria, but they are also split by political beliefs, family and tribal ties. There are two main Kurdish parties in Iraq and while they have varying levels of ties to Kurdish groups in other countries they are completely independent entities, as are Kurdish groups in Syria and Turkey. And they are not all one big happy family either, the two Kurdish parties in Iraq (the KDP and PUK) have fought each other several times, not rhetorically either, and one even temporarily allied themselves with Saddam to go after the other group.

So we are 'friends' of the Kurds but not all of them, especially the terrorist ones.

Be a lot cooler if we already had it. I know for a fact it's been a bitch for awhile about why NAVAIR can pump a lot of money into certain programs but leaves low hanging fruit such as upgraded ASE to fester on the vine. The stuff that is supposedly coming should've been fielded by now.

With that said, this video gives a good reinforcement that surviving a high threat MANPAD environment isn't just about hardware on the aircraft, but includes how and where you are flying your aircraft as well.

How and where you are flying your aircraft trumps warning systems every time.

In a real scenario, intelligence needs to accurately evaluate the threat and tactics need to be accurately implemented to defeat the known threat.

Like this thread started, don't highlight yourself to unknown threats in a mountainous regime. The best ASE gear in the world can't help a sitting duck.

Couldn't have said it better. Same thing with Morphine 12 example mentioned earlier....
