This whole notion that has been put forward by some (Paddles, Bates) is a red herring. It's not as though there's this real or perceived threat looming over people's heads, nor is there fear of mockery by their peers - complete and utter BS. Most JOs (or DHs) are either too busy, too lazy or have nothing worthwhile to say. I have to say that I'll include myself in this group, but this topic and the good Admiral's career-long practice of self expression have inspired and motivated me to do otherwise. I hope others feel the same way.

I am pleased to hear you haven't witnessed systematic discouragement. I too was in the aforementioned categories. It was the thought put forward here that writing was now actively discouraged by JOs and especially seniors that I was interested in. I guess it isn't.

in the words of the all knowing Wink - you too have missed the point. I agree 100% with what you just wrote - most of of us are too apathetic (or pre-occupied) to devote the level of a attention towards the pub when compared to the admiral...

Funny, that isn't what you posted at the beginning of this thread.

Funny. My original comment was aimed at imaging the ration of shit a JO in a ready room would get with the amount of output the good admiral had in his younger days. From that you construed that "we're that screwed up". I clarified my point for you and we get this parochial rant... So let me make sure you're reading my sarcastic comments correctly: if a dude in a ready room submitted the number of articles the admiral did when he was a JO he would have been made fun of. Not because "we" don't care about the future of the Navy or NavAir - not because "we" don't value professional development. It would have been because that what's happens in ready rooms - do something to highlight yourself and get made fun of. Its the irreverent good natured ribbing that allows us to tolerate those who are just a bit too wound up..... /smiley face/
Which is it, do you agree with Brett, or do JOs get pummeled by peers for submitting to professional journals and their seniors don't appreciate it, even frown on it. You have now straddled both sides of the fence. Your experiences are your own and I can't say what has happened in your ready room. But I would much prefer that Brett's experience was more common, and I suspect it is.

Its both, always been both - and your Perry Mason role playing here really doesn't amount to much. A lot of dudes don't read the mag because a lot of dudes find nothing in it that is relevant to their day to day comings and going (yes, this is where this generation is all "screwed up"...). WRT writing for the pub - its apathy that keeps most dudes from submitting - that would take some time that would be better spent doing what JOs do (pretty much anything but write for scholarly journals) - and yes, someone who did it frequently would probably get made fun of. I made no mention of seniors getting pissed - I made reference to the GOOD NATURED ribbing the author would get from his fellow JOs - pummeled, may have been the wrong choice of words - you appear to have taken it literally.

Well thank you. That is all I ever wanted to know. I have bent over backwards to try and promote a respectful exchange. I have gotten it from all others in this thread. You would rather be sarcastic, and rude then clear. What the hell crawled up your ass? If you really took umbrage to a perceived shot at the professionalism of your generation over this topic, then perhaps the physician should heal himself.
