Not a brown shoe...
Are there billets out there for officers to be part of NCIS or is it mainly civilian? I am just completing my undergrad in Forensic Science through STA-21 and would like to actually use it if possible. What sort of impact does a billet of this sort have upon promotions? Thanks for any input...

I have only ever seen civilians working at NCIS, so if there are any Navy people working with them, it would be an anomaly.

Not necessarily true. When I graduated Intel Specialist A school, several of my classmates, albeit enlisted types, got orders to NCIS offices. This was almost 7 years ago, however, so they may have changed their policies since then.

At this time there are no Law Enforcement type designators for Officers. There is discussion of an MA/Force Protection type designator, but it is yet to be created. I asked about this in the past because I was a CJ major/Police Officer who had thought about Federal LE (But I would never consider giving up my pilot job to do this, I am lucky enough to have it, and I'm going to keep it!) The JAG Corp does work closely with the NCIS agents from what I have observed in my 7 years, but no NCIS Commissioned Officers...It keeps the rank and command structure from interfering with any possibly investigations. (I would also look at the Inspector Generals Office also, but I think it too is a civilian entity).

NCIS used to have a few (3) intel officer agents assigned to them at their overseas field offices, but ONI cancelled this program because they felt they were loosing too many people because of it (The Officer agents went through FLETC prior to their tours with NCIS and used that to get LE jobs once they were able to get out).

Other then that, NCIS has about 200 Active duty Navy and Marines assigned to them in various roles (Admin, Intelligence officers doing analyst work, JAGs etc.)

I know some people who got jobs there, and they said that they love people with FS backgrounds, particularly GW's MFS program, so you should have some options when you reach the point you can get out.
