A ride in a Hornet?

I was talking with a current Marine Corps aviator, and he mentioned that once I was accepted or maybe through with OCS that if I completed the emergency swim training I could get a ride in a Hornet. Does anyone know if this is still the case? If so, who would I talk to once I'm in?

With zero knowledge my guess would be your best bet for riding in a Hornet is to get through primary, get lucky enough to select jets, wing, and be lucky enough to select Hornets.

Are you Marine Corps or Navy? If MC, yes the OSO offices arrange for Hornet flights maybe once per year to get/keep candidates motivated for Marine Corps Aviation--contact your Officer Selection Officer. . It is also possible (not probable) to get a stash job with one of the squadrons and get rides. . .For one ride in a Hornet you need only sign a waiver. . . For multiple you need to go to take a couple day course @ various NAS (I know for sure of Pax River. . .). Not sure what your opportunities are as a Navy OCAN.

From my own experience I know that the Air Force gives out incentive rides to cadets in the ROTC program, (maybe even to the people at the academy). I, along with 3 other cadets, were lucky enough to get to ride Shaw AFB's Block 50 F-16C's. The only things you have to be able to do is pass the AFOQT, go through Altitude Chamber training and pass the PFT. Also, you must show interest (alot of interest in flying). That was 2 years ago, nowadays, some guys say that from F-16's it changed to the AT-38B at the nearby Moody afb. Still it's worth it cause the T-38 is also an awesome machine.

I did NROTC summer training last summer(Aug. '01), and got 5 rides in the Hornet. All I did was go through a mini flight physical, and take an aviation physiology class (lasts 8 hours). After that you just get with the squadron and get a emergency egress qual from them.

Sounds like a heartbreaker. Thanks for the story, but I think I'll try another approach. Good luck with your flight training. Cessna 172's are almost as fun as Hornets, right?
