Unfortunately the movie couldn't display the signifigance of Murphy's actions in the end battle due to time constraints. Murphy fired from the exposed, gasoline soaked, burning tank destroyer for an eternity. While firing he repeatedly ran out of ammo. By the time he ran out of his supply he ran to the other destroyer and snagging that ammo, then hop back up and open back up. During the attack he was wounded by continued firing until the attack ceased an hour later.

It could be chalked up to fate that this guy wasn't admitted to the Marines. Europe gave him the opportunity to fight continuous prolonged campaigns and demonstrate the heroics that made him a legend through Sicily, Italy, Dragoon, and cracking the Rhine.
