I have been looking for a AR-15 upper receiver. I just looked into the S&W M&P 5.45x39. The ammo prices of 5.45x39 are AMAZINGLY lower than .223 or 5.56. Anyone here ever shot the M&P 5.45? Anyone know a lot about 5.45x39?

I don't own and have never shot a 5.45x39 AR.

The link below is for a tacked thread about nothing but the 5.45x39

Looks like some good gouge.

After checking that out I'd ask any remaining questions below the stickies in the AR Variants forum. Lots of info there about AR's in 6.8, 6.5, 7.62x39, 308 and others

These guys are very active. AR15.com contains a huge amount of great info as long as you stay away from the General Discussion forum.

Good luck

JBuck387,

I just got off the phone with Olympic Arms a few minutes ago. I asked about the military discount. The word I got was that discount was only good for their storefront sales in Washington State. Check with your authorized OA dealer in your area about military discounts. Expect up to a 6 mos backlog on full weapons delivery because the demand for weapons has recently quadrupled since the election. They are turning and burning on full weapons production which makes parts acquisition somewhat difficult from the factory at this time. Browse the OA forum for more current information.

"Testing is done, and barrels are in production right now for 16" barreled uppers and or complete guns chamvbered in the inexpensive 5.54x39 Russian round. It has been designed specifically to chamber and feed steel cased laquer coated ammo.

This is the end users opportunity for an inexpensive alternative to 5.56. You still get the same 'hi-power' feel, with a much lower price in ammo cost. With 5.56 ammo ever on the rise

1080 per can usually sells for around $150-$180 HALF the price of 5.56. The uppers will use 6.8 Remington mags and uppers and complete guns will sell for about $50.00 or so more than the comperable upper in 5.56."

thanks for the info Killer, I called Oly Arms the other day and they said even though the web site says they give a military discount to anyone no matter where they live, they are only doing it to store front sales right now cause of higher demand. I also found Palmetto State Armory makes a 5.45 upper, but its not Chrome lined.
