2/C cruise

Good morning ladies and gentlemen,
2/c cruise preferences are due soon and as someone who hasn't been to cortramid, I am not sure what to select. Aviation isn't an option so I was thinking a fast attack sub cruise would be cool hopefully out of the west coast. Would surface be a better choice? I'm pretty tall and I've heard med cruises can be a blast. Really I just haven't heard much about these cruises and would love to hear any experiences or advice from those more experienced than myself.

With covid, I’d assume port calls are going to be limited at best. Do what you think would be the coolest without ports.

I didn’t think that ended. At least I hope it didn’t. To the OP: I did cortramid in lieu of my 2/C cruise. It was a blast and I would encourage you to consider that.

I assume that the OP didn't go to CORTAMID for some reason (3yr scholarship?) As opposed to it doesn't exist anymore (although that could be true too).

Do ships do med cruises anymore? Back before the Forever Wars I did a med cruise that was a good time but not sure the liberty environment is the same.

In hindsight maybe a sub would have been cooler. I only ever spent 1 day on an SSN so might be a chance to see something you won't see again unless you go subs.

CORTRAMID (for NROTC) and PROTRAMID (for USNA) were moved from 2C summer to 3C summer beginning this year. That means that current 2C (who had it cancelled last summer) and rising 2C won't get that opportunity.

back in my day, mids had good opportunities during their 1C cruise. we had mids join us during Med cruise, and most of the time they got at least one right seat flight, with a cat/trap.

does that happen anymore? anyone in a super hornet or growler squadron ever have mids on cruise and do they ever get backseat rides?

Mids should always do SWO cruises. They give you sufficient insight into the community to do what it takes to avoid failing out of the other pipelines.

Which ironically enough, is how it used to be before they changed it 23 years ago. Go Navy!

As of 2019, it was still happening on cruise. I was in a single seat squadron, so I didn't see them much, but I'm pretty sure the mids attached to squadrons got airplane rides. No clue what's going on post-COVID, although don't plan on any port calls as part of your underway.

The OP says aviation isn't an option though, so none of the above really matters for them. I don't know much about life on Navy ships that aren't a CVN... pick your favorite, I guess. Location probably won't matter much as long as COVID-19 is running things.

Right, didnt join till this year as a 3/C. I'm qualed for aviation and I thought I could shadow this summer, but turns out options are surface cruise, sub cruise, or cortramid. Heard cortramid is a blast but summer campy so I decided to ask for sub cruise (at my own risk there being no ports open)

I did my 2/C Cruise on the Ike a few years ago. My thought process was to request a SWO-N cruise so they send me to a carrier and I can experience flight ops. Thankfully it worked out and I got to see some Super Hornet, Growler and T-45 carrier quals. It was an awesome experience to say the least. Shoot me a message if you have any questions.

I requested to do my 2/C cruise on a sub. COVID put a quick stop to that though. A lot of rising 2/C tend to use that cruise as a way of experiencing a community they don't want to service select. Hopefully I get a growler cruise this time around...

I know of one Mid who has since commissioned, who got a cat/trap on a C-2 for his 1/C cruise.

If you’re lucky enough to get an air wing squadron underway, there are ample opportunities to fly (MH-60, E-2, C-2, 2-person cockpits). If you’re unlucky and ashore with a squadron, there are other opportunities but you gotta be aggressive to make it happen.

Summer 2003, I was one of the NROTC instructors running CORTRAMID East. A few of my 1/C mids we’re on the Big E pierside, with no flying opportunities. I took care of them and got them both a ride on a P-3 and an MH-53. They BOTH went aviation. One became a P-3 pilot, the other was a MH-60 pilot.

Point is, there are opportunities, you just need to seek them out and ask. You know the answer if you don’t ask....just ask.
