I never realized that's where that sign came from....I ran through (Ellison field) during flight school quite a bit...pretty neat to see they still have the old hangars around.

It might be; I know our previous CO, CDR Sholley was very proud of it. It was there when I arrived in October, 2011.
That was a nice ~ 15 minute recruiting film. Personally, I think it could be summed up more aptly by the saying we all learned upon checking into flight training in the mid-60's: "Join the Naval Air Team, Travel to Far, Distant lands, Meet strange, exotic people - and kill them". A little cynical, but indicative of the times nonetheless.
Weird...42 years later, and the Marine Corps is still flying Jet Rangers, Hueys, Phrogs and Stallions. Don't know if your grooming regs have actually changed since then...but the grooming "culture" certainly has. 
Cobras also; not to mention we'll still be flying all of the above for the next 20+ years (with the exception of Phrogs).

Unfortunately for those of us Marines who don't enjoy having some portion of our head shaved to a zero, they have.
Strictly a "culture" thing, or have the regs changed? Serious question...
The regs changed I believe sometime during the 90s. I don't know the exact date as I wasn't in the Corps then, but in the Old Corps, you could grow your hair longer.

I don't know. I had a family friend who was a Major in the late 80s/early 90s and in the pictures on his wall he had a full civilian-esque haircut for his uniform photos. He said that was common at the time.

There were still high and tights, and even if you went "zero to three", it still started at "zero", ie fade vs. block cut. Navy guys could block cut their hair.
Hmmm. Never mind then. Maybe the guy I was talking about was just a rebel?
It was there when I was a student back in the early 90's. BTW, it is now CAPT Sholley - congrats to one of the good guys!
Are y'all referring to the arched signage in the screen shot above? If so, I'm not sure if it was at HT-8 when I was a student there in '87-'88 under CDR Mader. It may very well have been at HT-8...that was quite a while ago and I was a bit of a mess having received 3 downs while in VT-2...so I may have been distracted and not noticed the signage.

OK...that "TBHPITWATH" signage has me curious as to when it was installed at HT-8 at NASWF. I did some digging but couldn't find any date of installation...I thought I scored an installation date when I found the pics below (from 30AUG13) at the HT-8 Facebook page but the placard on the starboard abutment reads DEC 3rd, 1950 which is the establishment date of HTU-1 (redesignated HT-8 in 1960). So...the NASWF HT-8 "TBHPITWATH" signage installation date search continues...I guess I'll attempt to "Keep Calm and Ball On".
Late entry: I wouldn't be surprised if there is a much smaller installation date (not able to be seen via the posted pics) on the starboard abutment placard or possibly on the port abutment. Maybe a current Eightballer IP or SNA could check it out.
