I don't think it flew before 1958, but the X-15 is my all time favorite. I don't think it gets to be much more "stick and rudder" than that.....analog stability control, steam gauges, high key at 80k ft and mach 2, low key just barely subsonic in the 30's, 7+ G flare as the skids touch the lakebed. I can't even imagine what that must have been like
