1077 spambots. Release the ban-hammer!

I backed up the site. Updated software. Then banned all the spambots ~1077 that registered this morning. And then deleted (removed from view) the ungodly number of posts they made.

I turned off new registrations and locked down the ability to post until I finish clean up. You should be able to browse and post for registered users.

Off to dinner. Will enable registered users to post later tonight.

Ok. Re-enabled posting for registered members.

I could have missed some accounts that I didn’t ban. So report any if you see them.

I will turn back on registration for new accounts later this weekend. I want to change and tweak the settings to make it more difficult for bots to register.

I was deleting whole pages of posts when I got to page 5 and thought 'how many pages are there?', so I clicked on page 40 at the bottom of the webpage....and it was full of spam posts. After that I said fuck it.

There were around 2000+ threads created. Luckily I could use the bulk delete and ban hammer feature.

If so, why would bots do that?

Are the bots trying to sell something?
