Want a rifle - any recommendations?

Get an AR-15. In case you don't know, that is the civilian model of the M-16...same thing, just semi-auto. I picked up a really nice used one 2 summers ago for $500, and I love it.

    HEART & MINDS

Awesome post A4's...thank you. Isn't a shame that we rarely ever see these stories on the news or read them in the paper? There is a lot of good going on over there, but our biased media wants everyone to think that it's a catastrophe.

    Lynndie England; WTF?

There ain't no way she's walking away from this. The Army's going to make an example out her and the embarrassment she caused our country. I read today that she was actually trying to plea guilty and the judge denied it because there was evidence that she really did not regret what she did...

Chuck, the link in the second post is an MD-80 hard landing that varmint was talking about. I guess you are talking about the video in the first post which is a 737.

What's the deal with the Navy having too many pilots?

Anyone know if the marine corps is seeing the same thing right now? I heard from someone that they were hurting for pilots. Anyone know if that's true?

actually, it is an MD-80. The video was from a 1982 test flight at Edwards AFB. I don't know what the hell they were trying to do, but if the hard landing wasn't intentional, it was likely that the pilot flared too early. The 80 is very ass heavy with the engines back there. An MD-80 pilot...

What's the deal with the Navy having too many pilots?

I read in the AF times this weekend that the Navy has like 200 more pilots than they have aircraft for this year due lack of older pilots leaving and high retention. It said that the Navy is sending many of the new pilots to reserve units rather than releasing them. For all you guys that are...

    cell phone screen as beacon

I hear NVG's can pick up a very small amount of light from a very far distance. One of the F-15 pilots in my ANG unit told me he loves flying night with NVG's because he can see whose attacking him, and in the daytime he often cannot.

    Getting PRK

don't quote me on this, but i believe AF standards pre-op are something a max refraction error of -5 diopters. I don't know about Navy, but it might be similar. I was -2.5/-2.75 (20/400 both eyes) and am eligible.

    North Korea 'tests new missile'

I believe it was Clinton who gave crazy kim nuclear power technology in exchange for not developing a nuclear weapons program...oh wait, that's right n. korea admitted last year that they recently developed a nuke. so much for that brilliant idea.

    Post Military Career Careers

I know a retired tomcat driver (and top gun grad) who flies MD-11's for FedEX. He now makes somewhere in the ballpark of 150-175k per year, works half or less of every month and has great job security, (unlike airline pilots). He told me that FedEx's most senior captain that retired last year...

    Enlisted ANG to OCS

Boxer, I am AFANG enlisted and just completed college and am applying to Navy OCS to fly. If you want to get out of your contract, you must get a conditional release and have it signed by your commander. Your commander will make the call whether you will be able to be released prior to your...

    PRK before enlisting?

Yes you can have the surgery done before joining. I don't know about NROTC, but OCS candidates must wait 3 months after the surgery to apply for the waiver, have no complications, and provide all your medical records for the process. good luck.

    Getting PRK

I am applying for OCS to be a pilot, and my recruiter confirmed that OCS candidates must wait 3 months after the surgery to apply for the waiver. I have been told by a pilot that just finished primary flight training (and had PRK done) that it is better to get the waiver before being accepted...
