One for the Army WO bubbas

You may see a few C-27Js in the Guard units in the next few years, but the rest of the orders were cancelled. The vaunted Army organic theater lift program will go the way of the Commanche. The 160th doesn't have C-12s, but getting a company of C-27s for in house stuff. MR-

34 and trying to get into the Navy...need some advice

    1. See above for my first point. Fortuntely the new administration will start shovelling money your way to save the failing business. 2. If the Navy was your goal what was stopping you from applying? I'm pretty sure you didn't get stop lossed as a civilian. 3. If you do sack up and apply...

In the Army's defense, a duty station is entirely what you make of it. However, the Green machine has a larger number of holes, I've known guys who bitched about living in San Diego. I'm stationed at Ft Lewis, and I can honestly say it's probably where we'll be staying after retirement in the...

    API rumor control

Personally, I don't give a sh*t if the cleaner's lost your uniform, your wife forgot to drop it off, or you simply didn't budget your time correctly. I also don't care if you lost you wallet and got too drunk to get yourself home. During my "formative years" early in my career I've gotten...

    API rumor control

Actually to the layperson, it would appear your purpose was to take the high ground and soundly announce to all who live in AW-Land that you are consistently exercising good judgement, while simultaneously advising peers to do the same, and publically admonishing those who choose the path of...

One for the Army WO bubbas

The guidance I usually give potential WO Aviators is this: When you sign the WOCS contract, the Army promises only to send you to flight school to fly helicopters. Eerything else is a crap shoot. To that end I think they produce arguably some of the best heicopter pilots in the world. Possibly...

    Q's regarding Naval Sea Cadets

Having witnessed both the Sea cadets and CAP side by side, I'll have to say that the Sea Cadets don't fair very well. As goofy as they are, CAP cadets are usually much more disciplined and corraled than their Sea Cadet counter parts. Plus, even though they're AF affiliated, CAP is aviation...

    BEST places to RETIRE-

Coincidentally, we just went through an agonizing year of retirement preparation and planning. We currently live in Olympia, WA but I was offered a great flying job in central Illinois. It paid very well, but it was located in a very small farm town and while crime was low and housing averaged...

    Helicopter Simulators

Our MH-47G sims are level D, full motion. the 47G cockpit is so procedurally complex regarding page flow, that the sim is a must. When new pilots begin the 47G transition, they spend their first 25 hours in the sim and even take their first stage check in it. To do the same in the aircraft would...

Trying to get into Navy OCS, either Intel or EOD

Steph, Don't rule out a career as a deep sea diving officer as well. If you really like getting wet, you might actually find yourself diving more at a MDSU (Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit) Which also gives you the opportunity for future assignments to a SEAL Team, SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team...

Project Liberty - USAF MC-12s for dedicated ISR mission

Not nearly the shock as you would get when an ascot wearing AF type congratulates you on your winging, and hands you orders for your UAV assignment. The way the AF is going, I'd get on my knees and pray daily that I got MC-12s. MR-

    Naval Aviator -> Special Forces

Bingo...when I got to the SEAL Teams I had every intention of retiring as a Master Chief (I sometimes wish I had). The opportunity to go to flight school came relatively late in my enlisted career. However, it one of those "grass is greener on the other side of the fence" scenarios. The...

I'm going to go out on a limb and bet these athletes got a solid night's sleep, proper nutrition the previous day unlike BUD/S. I'm also guessing they aren't getting told "start over turd" half way through their times push-ups. They probably aren't getting hosed down either. MR-

    .357 kick?

Mrs. Pickle, No matter what hand gun you end up buying, home defense is all about shot placement, shot placement, and shot placement. The caliber doesn't matter nearly as much as selecting a gun you know you're going to be able to comfortably handle and afford to shoot often. Bigger isn't...

    USMC to 160th SOAR.

I was corrected once by a pilot at Nellis that it's not referred to as a scarf, but rather an ascot. I said "That actually makes it ten-fold queerer than I first thought."

    USMC to 160th SOAR.

Actually, you still retire at the highest grade held, so he'll retire as an O-5, but right now, he'll probably pin on CW3 (accellerated) if he hasn't already, and he's getting the 25K SOA bonus, which puts him above 6 figures with no duties other than flying. Seems like a good deal to me.

    USMC to 160th SOAR.

As of a couple of weeks ago, there are at least 3 ex-USMC pilots flying for the 160th. Two 46 guys (now MH-47s), and of the aforementioned skid guy who did the exchange tour, saw the light and is now flying AH-6s. We do not take direct commision aviators. If you decide to assess for the...

We get alot of "It must be easy in the MH-47Gs with the glass panel, auto hover, etc". Actually, I might as well have a Piper Cub panel the last 30 seconds of the assault. It's all gross motor skills at that point. The 47 creates unbeleivable brown out, single ship not to mention tight...

    What a bitch

Every year you take a flight physical, your eyes will get checked for anomolies associated with the PRK. I used to have to get checked every 6 months (in between flight physicals), but that's when they weren't quite sure of the long term effects on PRK for aviators. It might be more main stream now.

    Dry Firing

Zissou was a SEAL? Anyway, he's right, dry firing doesn't damage the weapon nearly as much as live rounds, much less blanks. Hawk, First off it's always spelled SEALs (not Seals), and Teams are always capitalized. Anyway, it's always been much easier to earn a commission as a SPECWAR officer with enlisted time rather than coming from OCS. In fact, that may be your best chance. You will have some significant...

    Pushup question regarding fatigue

Jayhawk, I highly recommend the Crossfit workout which will bring up push ups (as well as everything else), but it's takes several weeks to really adjust to the program. Another option for shorter term results is an upper body "pyramid" M/W/F 1 pull-up, 2 push-ups, 2 dips 30 second...
