    Aviation instructor career path

We've also tried flying Warrants several times (3?) and each time has failed, most recently, pretty spectacularly from what I saw. I'd type more but I am going to bed.

Roll of ship when landing on carrier?

I can't speak to the fixed wing side of things, but as far as helicopters go, the limits on pitch and roll change based on both the class of ship and Type/Model/Series of helicopter. I seem to recall having mostly 6 degree roll limits (to either side) which weren't uncommonly seen on DDGs in the...

    Hot new helicopter/rotorcraft news

I literally had it e-mailed down from a friend to a friend to a friend. I recognized every name that it was forwarded from so it seemed like a legit source. I haven't gotten any besides this one probably because I am at the HTs and it had some HT flavor to it.

non aviator lat transfer into usmc or army

Do you have any commitment as an officer in the Navy? - If yes, expect to serve it. Have you had your POCR board yet? If no, expect to have to do that - you'll be redesignated to something in the Navy unless in the off chance all active O-1 billets are filled across the board for anything you're...

    Hot new helicopter/rotorcraft news

I finally found that community missive I had mentioned earlier that contained the tidbit about wanting the new HT trainer to replace the SAR DET birds. "With the right acquisition approach, we could also use the AHTS (Advanced Helicopter Training System) aircraft to fulfill Station SAR...

    Hot new helicopter/rotorcraft news

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that how they've gotten some squadrons armed helos? I know it's a long (and presumably expensive) process, but isn't it just effectively adding the data bus and the wiring to handle the weapons? I'm very much under the impression that the last S rolled off the...

    Hot new helicopter/rotorcraft news

I mean, it's Skipper dependent, but in general, the rule that I got taught in the FRS applied pretty well: "If you excel at 2 out of the following three and are good at the third, you'll get taken care of: - be a good pilot, a good officer, and a good dude." In general, our high time fliers were...

Yeah... my peers are jealous of that haha. Now you start like 9 months out trying to detail into a flying job.

    Hot new helicopter/rotorcraft news

To be clear, I've corrected it to more like 30-40%. I apologize, I had forgotten to count a few of the guys from my and my sister squadron.

    Hot new helicopter/rotorcraft news

I'd have to assume they were - they've done it to other ones at least. In the same missive (I swear I'll get it here soon), it also said the future ideal solution would be a "block iv" across the fleet so all the 60S's were the same. As others have said in other words, helo pilots (and I...

I'm an idiot and forgot to get it yesterday. I had today off and I'll get it tomorrow... hopefully.

    Hot new helicopter/rotorcraft news

Yeah, looking back at my squadron it was closer to 30% than 50%, you're right. Similarly, 30-40% from our sister HSM squadron. All but one of those that didn't though all wanted to continue flying and weren't given that opportunity.
  13. DanMa1156

    Hot new helicopter/rotorcraft news

I'd hazard a guess ~35-50% of USN helo pilots don't fly past their first tour. Not sure about other communities.

    Consolidated Advice for Primary

Yeah, for sure. But there's definitely one like this (probably to a lesser degree) in every class.

    Consolidated Advice for Primary

Yeah, I'm with you on that, but what made the first guy in particular such a tool was all the bragging about the studying and trying to show off his work ethic by showing his screenshots of a perfectly flown ILS or break on MS Flight Simulator on facebook.

This is something the HSC community has pitched as a way to bring MH-60S's back to the fleet in the most recent (May?) community missive.

    IFS affecting future learning

I've seen it weed it out some of my peers who definitely did not have the aptitude to fly. They stopped it for a couple years after I completed it, but brought it back since they were having more attrition later in the program. Paying $150 per hour for 14 hours and figuring out someone sucks in...

    Hot new helicopter/rotorcraft news

The irony of the Navy going back to the Huey as the training helicopter it uses would be too much. Doubt it will happen though - hasn't seemed to have been pitched from what I understand.

I didn't necessarily read that in his posts, but I've heard it over and over again from FRS peers. I love when I compare my 35-65 hours per month but all of my FRS peers have 16-20 per month and get Wednesdays off to take college courses. I love the HSC "manifesto" written by HSC-2 guys...

I was with you until this line, assuming you didn't mean, "be the best stick in the squadron." But, as much as I want to disagree with you... I know you're probably right and I'll shut up.
  26. DanMa1156

    Fleet fly in 2018

Yeah. Is anyone leaving the fleet without those these days (as in is anyone leaving under 750)? Outside of a 40-60k / year EMS or BP job (ok those are a little more), no one cares about single engine helo time. Compare that to a Helo guy turned VT, and guess what? He has complex fixed wing time...

    Fleet fly in 2018

    1. Ask what deployments are like for them. 2. Ask about the best and worst flying they've done. (I thought plane guard and VERTREP would be boring, but 4 searches for real people, a rescue, and the awesome fun that is VERTREP ended up being awesome just like my instructors had told me it would...

    Fleet fly in 2018

I'm just saying the most recent board in HSC/HM/HSM had 0 select for command from any CNATRA tour. 0. In my fleet experience, among 3 squadrons that shared our building, we had 1 CO from the HT's and 1 DH from the HT's. The rest were all FRS, SWTI, and one was a test bubba who earned his SWTI...

    Fleet fly in 2018

Yeah, understood. I'm an HT guy now from the HSC community. If I was in your shoes, I'd be putting down and VT's and not disclosing it to your CO/XO. They don't need to know. HT/VT's are still long days - but they are long days flying. Vetween the brief and 2-3 flights per day + gradesheets...

    Fleet fly in 2018

Some guys from HT/VT make DH or OP-T DH. 0 from the last board in any helicopter community made command after having had any tour in the HT's or VT's. I've known one to exist, a former skipper of mine.

    Fleet fly in 2018

First part: agree wholeheartedly. Second part: I don't know if that's a function of a healthy community as much as it is just overloading wardrooms with JO's and making less DH's than HSM. A CVW squadron you go from like 20-25 JOs to 5 DH's. I imagine the numbers are slightly worse for east...

    Whiting Field Rooms for Rent

All - posting here for my neighbor and friend - she's basically an empty nester and looking to shore up her finances by renting two of her rooms out to local military. She's willing to do pretty short term as well even if you just need to get settled in the area. She's got a great pool, huge...

Hahah, fair, but to be clear, South Florida =/= the "South," culturally speaking in general. Florabama is a colloquial term or just simply saying the Pensacola area is part of the Bible Belt would be more accurate. I agree, there's heavy Southern culture in Pensacola, but South Florida is is...

The percentage of students that get jets.

Ha, I texted my old roommate who is in that squadron and his response was basically "ha, that's hysterical. Yeah, that sounds like him." He thought it was more of the fact the student was not well liked and the CO wanted him to get his last choice than it was a slight against helicopter pilots.

Dude, awesome research, you should change your name to ManwithAnswers, I suspect. However, using the Ctrl-F function and doing a super quick read (actually fairly interesting and I'll be coming back to this) I think what you read is that F/A-18 DH Selection rate was 49% in 2017 and that left...

    Consolidated Advice for Primary

Nah, I disagree with this. I had a guy I went through in primary with who would never come out because it could mean he could have been studying. He was the kind of guy that would do the CAI's over and over and over again just to show he had a perfect 100 on every.single.one. He would post...
