Trying for AD pilot through OCS/OTS. USAF/USN AD pilot pros and cons?

Sure, but Army Air Corps = Air Force. The differences were the same back then too. And the AF definitely derives their culture from their time as the AAC, before 1947. They have many of the same units, and all.

Trying for AD pilot through OCS/OTS. USAF/USN AD pilot pros and cons?

Why would you think it would be any different now? The Navy and the AF as a fundamentally different today as they were 100 years ago. Don't base your decision on the intricacies that can and will change by the time you get to the fleet. Base your decision on what service you want to be an...

    Air National Guard gouge

So they treat it in a similar way, but it's not necessarily the same (though a "bad" year is considered a break in service). Because I was completely separated from the USMC, and not affiliated with any Guard or Reserve unit for 4 months, I'm considered to have a break in service in my initial...

Okay- getting started here. The Joining Process. I'm at the MQ-9 FTU (FRS) doing a TX-1 (CAT Other) course at March ARB. Not a bad place to spend the next five months. I joined the Mi ANG, and I'm with the 172d Attack Squadron in Battle Creek. First thing is first- no matter what happens, no...

    Air National Guard gouge

You're not wrong, but there is a fraternity for almost everyone. It might not be the airplane you want to fly, or the place you want to fly it, but the Guard does a really good job of putting like minded folks in the same place. Unless you've been blackballed because you're not a good person to...

    NEWS AI versus F-16 Pilot

I'm glad you're happy with a 1960s airplane updated to 1997 tech. Don't get so butt hurt when someone else may know more than you about something. You might find that your viewpoint is also pretty damn narrow. You say you don't want anything to do with the robot world, yet here you are...

Awesome. I'll be sure the tell the dozen or so companies, 3 universities, and the Gov sponsor that you think we don't know what we're doing at our next exercise. If you think you know better, send me your resume to forward to the team leads. We can always use smart guys who know how AI and ML...

Corpus or Whiting? And current primary length

Caveat to say that I'm a Guardsman. And it's better than flight school. But I'm not in the fleet. I'm in the Guard!
  13. Swanee

Corpus or Whiting? And current primary length

Here's the gouge, stay in flight school as long as possible. Don't be in a rush to get to the fleet. Every single guy and girl with wings on their chest would trade places with you in a heartbeat.

    NEWS AI versus F-16 Pilot

Potentially. NK, Iran, some others... We've made mistakes with Patriot batteries in auto mode shooting down friendlies. And we all know that Iran really screwed the pooch by shooting down the airliner. I'm not sure what you're getting at- even the bad guys will abuse fertilizer and diesel fuel.

    NEWS AI versus F-16 Pilot

You can shoot on a brick on a computer screen if you have PID solved per the ROE. Sometimes PID means confirmed presence of enemy and confirmed absence of friendly. That is an area that is being worked through. But sometimes it's more complicated than that (Oh look, that SOF or 3 letter agency...

    NEWS AI versus F-16 Pilot

From what I've seen, and what I believe, we're a long way off on the ROE front from allowing AI to actually engage targets without realtime human approval. We're closer on the technology front, and doctrine always follows technology. But I'm reasonably confident that automated weapons...

    NEWS AI versus F-16 Pilot

AI is really good at Injesting sensor data and making decisions based on a matrix, as well as flying the numbers to a T. (It does what it's told, at times to a fault.) It struggles with multiple outcome decisions where something is ambiguous. But we do too. Using AI to enhance our capabilities...

    NEWS AI versus F-16 Pilot

So many decisions are made, with so much information in. It would require a HUGE amount of data storage to be able to map out what Hal was thinking when it made one of a million decisions.

    NEWS AI versus F-16 Pilot

1- AI glider? Interesting.... 2- working on a project to develop autonomous recce. Big thing we're learning is that sensor control is hugely human centric. The way AI wants to do things is faster, more efficient, and much more accurate.

    The Ol' Double P.

This is true. Lots of part timer airline guys sucking up 180 and 365 day IMA orders. None want an AGR tour though- 3-5 years is a lot for a guy who thinks the airlines will recover before then.
  23. Swanee

    The Ol' Double P.

Yes. It's called AGR. The billets tend to vary by type of community, but there are a lot of opportunities to earn a full 20 year AD retirement in the ANG.

Any reason to keep Navy Fed, USAA banking?

Good looking out. I will say that it was paired with my mortgage from Guaranteed Rate. Their independent agent has pretty much cornered the market at my Guard Squadron- we'll see how it turns out.

Any reason to keep Navy Fed, USAA banking?

I keep banking, personal article floaters (I've got a couple of custom made bass guitars, and no one comes close to their rates that covers musical instruments and equipment) and car insurance with USAA. Customer service on all has been great. Thinking about adding an umbrella policy...

What not to do when you drive off base in uniform.

Standardized comms and comm brevity. Words have meaning. In my civilian job I constantly have to coral engineers and operations types to use the proper language, because "I assumed he knew was I was talking about" is how we get some really shitty products to the fleet.

What not to do when you drive off base in uniform.

I think we all agree that politics and religion don't belong in the day to day curriculum in public schools. I fully support the scholastic club system, and that is where a student can meet and identify with other students who share ideologies, and where they can apply those ideologies to what...

Yeah, I indeed grew up singing show tunes and going to the theater. I dated a lot of (female!) jazz/tap/ballet dancers- you should be jealous. ? FWIW, in college, they live on marlboro lights, diet coke, salads, protein shakes, and appetite suppressant drugs of all shapes and sizes. It was...

What not to do when you drive off base in uniform.

The problem is that the standard military flight student has been screened and evaluated for the traits that make someone successful vs not. Even then, plenty of folks fail out. Public schools don't get to not accept a student because they don't think they'll pass. But flight schools do that.
  35. Swanee

What not to do when you drive off base in uniform.

True. Magnet schools get a lot more leeway than the meat grinder that is the generic public school. The idea is that they get a better education. That better education comes from more critical thought and subjective grading. My mom taught (she retired this school year) Literature in a...

So is it the teachers or is it the system in which they have to teach? When do you start critical thinking? Standardized testing begins in elementary school. We've reached a point where teaching test taking skills has become equally, to perhaps a little more, as important as covering the...

What not to do when you drive off base in uniform.

As a liberal arts guy with a degree in theater I can see (and have also seen) the places within the university systems where this exists. I think it may be the pendulum swing from so many years of conservative actions and thought within the history of higher education. Remember that only...

What not to do when you drive off base in uniform.

It's not the teachers. Standardized testing. There is no critical thinking when there is one definite right answer and 3 wrong answers that you choose from. Attention spans haven't gotten shorter, life has become flashier and more things are competing for our attention now- advertisers created...

What not to do when you drive off base in uniform.

You're not wrong. But... The US military has a significant lack of liberal voices and has a clear institutional conservative bias that I'd argue is about as far right as you think education is left (though the American scale vs the world scale on what is right vs left is... wonky). Yet all...
