    VADM Edwards' Article

Much like the number of asses that need to go ship to ship will grow to meet the number of seats in the PMC bird, the amount of data passed will quickly grow to meet the amount of bandwidth available. Having said that, we have assets in the fleet already that are capable of passing enormous...

Will PERS-43 Website ever be updated?

NPC has a train wreck coming. They are going to get their asses kicked trying to move from IAs to GSAs and a lot of lower-priority commands are going to see their fill rates dive. (And you do care about NPC's problem, because in the end the solution is going to be more and more "good" jobs...

UAVs, not just an Air Force gig anymore

As much as other services make fun of the Air Force for fighting "doing more with less", a lot of the scorn is born of simple jealousy. We wish our leadership would make the same fight, because the only logical end of "doing more with less" is doing everything with nothing. Instead of getting...

Stupid questions about the Rhino (Super Hornet)

UAV's are "better" because eliminating the live crew saves weight/cubic/$$$ because you don't need the requisite support for the live bodies. The fact that the vehicle's loss doesn't bring the loss of life is (depending upon the mission) either a nice bonus or a key factor in...

Stupid questions about the Rhino (Super Hornet)

There is no way - the "too hard" and "too expensive" lights would come on long before we could get it done. Besides, the smart money is on taking bodies out of tactical aircraft, not putting more in...

    FITREP Code Words

That is a real good point - you have to look at the whole combination; if the board sees a mixed message then they default to the low end. Remember, at least to O-5 they are more looking for reasons to drop people out than to pick people up. Yeah, I fail.
  7. B

    FITREP Code Words

"Potential" won't harm a sailor up until his Evals are being looked at for E-7. It could be viewed negatively for LT and up on a FITREP unless the break-out/numbers make it obvious that he was a player and the "potential" is for great things far down the road - i.e. Flag (not that Flag recs are...

    MEPS Issues

Not needed at all. No pre-reqs for AMDO (though you do go to sea so you have to be able to pass a sea-duty screening). I think your resume would come out stronger from IW than Intel - but that is just personal opinion.

    MEPS Issues

If you want to stay in aviation, have you looked at AMDO?

USMC Executive Flight Detachment (HMX-1 and Presidential Helo)

By the way, if you are scoring at home, that is now ($11.2B/28 aircraft) = $400M/aircraft. Add in the $1k/hr for the reach-around (just mention Spitzer's name at the window...) and we are talking about real money at this point.

UAVs, not just an Air Force gig anymore

This is not going to drive anybody towards more manned fighters (see the 12 Mar GAO on JSF article): http://www.defense-aerospace.com/cgi-bin/client/modele.pl?session=dae.21863567.1153163487.RLvg38Oa9dUAAE9euUo&modele=jdc_34 (Added bonus - read about Boeing's protest of the tanker award).

Boeing Tanker: Beans, Bullets, Oil, and politics .. and did we mention: politics ??

Yes, but... You skipped quite a few steps in that process that led to a re-award then an outright re-compete. It would take quite a few rounds of upheld protests plus political pressure to get to the point where they would re-compete with a different airframe. Having said that, this was from...

NAVAIR Reserve Program (NRP) and DCO opportunities: AEDO & AMDO

Are you sure you don't mean AMDO? Are you already commissioned? There are only a couple reserve AEDO's and it doesn't seem like your profile would match. EDIT: saw your other thread. You won't direct commission into AEDO.

Boeing Tanker: Beans, Bullets, Oil, and politics .. and did we mention: politics ??

Like by trying to lease us the 767? To me, there are a lot of similarities between Boeing losing this bid and SAC losing the Presidential Helo. I think both took it for granted that they would win.

Boeing Tanker: Beans, Bullets, Oil, and politics .. and did we mention: politics ??

http://www.defenseindustrydaily.com/Penalties-for-Unwarranted-GAO-Protests-04755/ I thought it was interesting that an AF general felt the need to advocate punishments for protesting contract awards right before this decision came out. This is the same general that got spanked for...

Boeing Tanker: Beans, Bullets, Oil, and politics .. and did we mention: politics ??

There is potential for a lot more ugliness for Boeing beyond this contract: it has been looking less likely that they will keep CSAR-X with every new development. http://www.defenseindustrydaily.com/gao-re-csarx-recompete-the-contract-03082/...

Army and Navy work together...Great pic

Can't speak to the 160 guys, but I did some of the training for CA NG 47 drivers some years back. They did the standard navy 6 dlq's to a qual. Through an arrangement with CNAF they had one of us go along for their instructor's intitial qualification. (As a side note, the first instructor...

USMC Executive Flight Detachment (HMX-1 and Presidential Helo)

Nothing about these problems are new. The difference is that "back in the day" the prices were small time (relatively speaking) compared to various fixed wing projects. All that changed (as our Army friends well know) with the death of the Comanche. Having said that, -71 is uglier than most...

So that explains all the B mishaps?
  21. B

    TH-57 fleet grounding

Autos in dual-engine military helicopters tend to be for tail rotor or transmission issues rather than dual engine failure. As to the other question, the 206/57 has a much higher inertia head than modern military helicopters. And you would only need to goon up one full auto in a fleet bird...

    Question on Grad School

Well that is just plain wrong. Anybody can see that in today's highly challenging, joint environment we will need officers that can toss midgets with either hand.

    Question on Grad School

Scoob makes a good point: if the OP isn't going to do 20 then he really shouldn't pass this up (remember, those guys getting a Master's on their first shore tour are potentially extending their commitment). I do think we will be out of the IA business by the time the OP would potentially get...
  25. B

    Question on Grad School

That is very much true, but what I am saying is that one year of grad school right after commissioning can only be a potential problem if you are pack, pack-minus in your community anyways. But if you are pack-plus then your community will make your timing work.
  26. B

    Question on Grad School

Don't worry about the career timing. If you are a player in whatever community you end up in then they will make your timing work. If you aren't, then the fact that your timing is off isn't your biggest problem.

    helos

And if you look at the difference in lay out, missions, aircraft, etc. between now and just 15 years ago, and you can see that things change. (And that is not just a helo thing; it wasn't that long ago that claiming that a hornet would be giving gas to other people would have got you mocked...

B-2 down in Guam, Crew ejected safely.

Not saying it is related to anything but this is an actual conversation between myself and a TDY B-2 driver at Andersen back in '98: Him: "Hey, are you with that helicopter squadron?' me: "yep" Him: "I was watching one of your helo's and we couldn't figure out what it was doing: it would...

    Military Aviation Major

Nope. Though I would suspect they have something similar. (USMC-type want to post your equivalent?)
  32. B

    Military Aviation Major

NPC will assign you an academic profile code based on what math/science/engineering type classes you took and what your GPA was. They will then use that in determining your eligibility for some programs.
  33. B

    Military Aviation Major

I hate to actually post something on-topic, but your major (and grades) can restrict you later on if you are interested in things like TPS, AEDO, some grad school options, etc.

    Navy Golfing

The re-work on NASNI's course is nice - much improved. Also, if in San Diego you can get a local's card and play Torrey Pines cheap. (It is no joke from the tips, though, so be prepared for a little pain if you try that). And Monterey is another great spot with Black Horse and Bayonet - best...

    What Rules to Follow?

Pup and I have quite a few flights in common in our logbooks in more than one command, so I will dispense with pretending I've never deliberately busted a rule. We were at -5 together back when it was the last of the wild west, so I will limit myself to saying that while he has seen me make...

    officer retention

I would have been gone long since had I thought I needed to stay in my old community (or at least stay in what it turned into) for my entire career. As you are pondering the stay/go decision don't forget that a little disloyalty to your community can have a positive affect on your job...

Romney opts out of Presidental Race

Among the things I learned in my brief stint in academia; there is way more money out there than people realize. It may not always be easy to find, but there are literally mountains of aid out there for a hard working kid.

Word to their Mothers! (Do the cool kids still say that.....?) In all seriousness you ought to listen to him; a friend of mine had a similar experience a few months ago and it left him very unimpressed.

    officer retention

This is a good opening to repeat that adage that nobody cares more about your career than you do. It boggles my mind when I meet JO's with no understanding or interest in how the detailing process works. Reagan's "trust, but verify" is a must.

    officer retention

I will do 17/20 in the cockpit (1 year stash before flight school, two years on the boat for a dis-associated which I don't regret a bit). By the time I'm done I will have seen 7 T/M/S with a >13,000 spread between BuNo's. My last skipper made CAPT with only two years out of the cockpit (in a...

    mattress suggestions??

Sorry, I wasn't clear. We don't use a pad and don't have a problem with being too hot. But I have heard other people complain and for some the other pad was a solution. Since we are happy with ours I can't say I paid close attention to other people's complaints. Know anybody with a memory...

    mattress suggestions??

You can get the pad as well (the lower density foam in that pad lets air circulate better). Generally it seems that the multi-layer foam mattresses do a lot better with the getting hot issue (though they are more expensive). I can't vouch for the fewer-layer types.

Stupid questions about the Rhino (Super Hornet)

The problem is that the "original question" you refer to is flawed. How many traps is an A/C model hornet good for? What happens after that last trap? What is the $$ cost per increase in capability? How would you measure that? What about the increase in performance? Is that worth anything by...

Stupid questions about the Rhino (Super Hornet)

Incorrect. The general consensus is that you have no idea how the design and construction (let alone the procurement) of military aircraft works. If you can limit yourself to "thrust vectoring rocks," then we would all more or less shrug in general agreement (regardless of how applicable we...

Stupid questions about the Rhino (Super Hornet)

Just out of curiousity - how much $ and manhours do you think that took to produce a one-off with no requirement for longevity and ease of maintenance or to still meet the KPP's of the original platform? To echo somebody else above you are doing great on enthusiasm (which actually does count...
